Indian passport holders must obtain an electronic visa, or ASAN e-visa, before travelling to Azerbaijan. The process is entirely online through the official government portal (evisa.gov.az) and typically takes three to five working days. The standard
tourist e-visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. Do not attempt to travel without a pre-approved visa, as there is no visa-on-arrival facility for Indian tourists. The local currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). As of September 2026, 1 AZN is roughly equal to 56 INR, but it's wise to check the latest rates before your trip. You can exchange currency at the airport or various exchange offices in the city. For connectivity, purchasing a local SIM card from providers like Azercell or Bakcell upon arrival is the most budget-friendly option for data and calls.
Day 1: Arrival and Old City Exploration
Upon arriving at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), take the Aero Express bus to the 28 May metro station in the city centre; it's the cheapest and most efficient option. After checking into your budget-friendly hotel or hostel, begin your adventure in the heart of Baku: Icherisheher, the Old City. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets. Explore the iconic Maiden Tower and the majestic Palace of the Shirvanshahs. End your day with a leisurely walk along the Baku Boulevard, a beautiful promenade stretching along the Caspian Sea.
Day 2: Modern Marvels and a Panoramic View
Dedicate your second day to Baku's stunning modern architecture. Start by visiting the Heydar Aliyev Center, an architectural masterpiece designed by Zaha Hadid, famous for its flowing, curved style. While the entrance has a fee, the building's exterior is a spectacle in itself and offers fantastic photo opportunities. In the afternoon, head to Highland Park for the best panoramic views of the city, the Caspian Sea, and the iconic Flame Towers. Day 3: The Land of Fire Beckons
Today, take a day trip to explore the fiery wonders of the Absheron Peninsula. First, visit the Ateshgah Fire Temple in Surakhani, a historical religious site once used by Zoroastrians and Hindu worshippers. Afterward, head to Yanar Dag, the 'Burning Mountain'. This natural gas fire blazes continuously on a hillside and is a truly unique sight, especially after dusk. You can reach these sites using a combination of public buses for a budget-friendly journey or by booking a half-day tour which often includes both locations.
Day 4: Ancient History and Mud Volcanoes
Embark on another exciting day trip, this time to Gobustan National Park, about 60 km south of Baku. This UNESCO-listed site is home to thousands of ancient rock petroglyphs (carvings) that date back thousands of years. Just a short drive from the petroglyphs, you'll find another of Azerbaijan's strange natural wonders: bubbling mud volcanoes. The landscape here feels otherworldly. Organised tours are the easiest way to visit both the rock art and the mud volcanoes, as public transport to the latter can be tricky.
Day 5: Carpets, Culture, and Finding Indian Food
Back in Baku, spend the morning at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, which is famously shaped like a rolled-up carpet. It offers a fascinating insight into the country's rich weaving heritage. In the afternoon, dive into a local market like Yashil Bazaar (Green Market) to buy local sweets, spices, and dried fruits. For dinner, if you're craving a taste of home, Baku has several excellent Indian restaurants. Options like Namaste Restaurant, Maharani, and Masala Junction offer authentic Indian dishes to satisfy your palate.
Day 6: Final Strolls and Departure
Use your last morning for some final souvenir shopping on Nizami Street or a relaxed stroll through any part of the city you fell in love with. You could visit the quirky Museum of Miniature Books in the Old City, one of the only museums of its kind in the world. Enjoy a final Azerbaijani tea before heading back to Heydar Aliyev International Airport for your flight home, filled with memories of this captivating city.
