The New Rule of Airport Lounges
Not long ago, complimentary airport lounge access was a standard feature on many credit cards. Today, the landscape has changed. Most banks in India have shifted to a spend-based model, especially for their entry-level and mid-tier cards. This means your
“free” access is now conditional; it must be earned by spending a certain amount of money on your card. While this might seem like a devaluation, it's actually a system that rewards regular usage. The key is to unlock this benefit without spending more than you normally would, turning a simple payment tool into a passport for pre-flight comfort.
Understanding Quarterly Spend Requirements
The most common condition is meeting a minimum spend threshold in a preceding calendar quarter. Banks define quarters as January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December. If you meet the spending target in the January-March quarter, you unlock lounge access for the April-June quarter. The spending amount varies significantly by card. For instance, some popular ICICI Bank cards require a spend of ₹75,000 in a quarter. Others, like the IDFC FIRST Select card, might require a monthly spend of ₹20,000. Meanwhile, a card like the Scapia Federal Bank credit card offers unlimited access for a relatively low monthly spend of just ₹5,000. It is crucial to read your card’s terms to know the exact target you need to hit.
Your Strategy for Hitting the Target
Meeting a quarterly spend target of, say, ₹75,000 might sound daunting, but it breaks down to just ₹25,000 a month. The strategy is not to spend more, but to consolidate your planned expenses onto one card. Instead of spreading your payments across different cards or using cash, channel all your routine spending—groceries, fuel, utility bills, online shopping, and dining—through the card with the lounge benefit. Think of it as funnelling your existing budget to work smarter for you. By consciously using one primary card for these regular payments, you can often meet the spending criteria without altering your lifestyle or budget.
How to Track Your Progress
Forgetting to track your spending is the easiest way to miss out on your lounge benefit. Thankfully, banks are making it easier to monitor your progress. The most reliable method is using your credit card issuer’s official mobile app, like HDFC’s MyCards or ICICI’s iMobile Pay. These apps often have a dedicated section under 'Benefits' or 'Rewards' that shows your progress towards the quarterly spending milestone and confirms your eligibility for the upcoming quarter. Alternatively, third-party apps like Card Insider or Adani One allow you to add multiple cards and track their respective lounge benefits and spending requirements in one place. Set a recurring calendar reminder for the last week of each quarter to check your status and make any final necessary purchases.
Know the Fine Print Before You Fly
Before you head to the airport, be aware of a few common rules. First, the complimentary access is almost always for the primary cardholder only; guests will be charged. Second, when you present your card at the lounge, a small authentication fee of ₹2 or ₹25 is typically charged to verify that your card is active and eligible. Also, note that some spend categories like wallet loads, rent payments, or EMI transactions may not count towards the minimum spend threshold. Finally, some cards, like the HDFC Millennia, present a choice: after spending ₹1 lakh in a quarter, you can claim either a lounge voucher or a gift voucher worth ₹1,000, meaning the lounge visit comes at the cost of another reward.
