A New Window to the Western Ghats
Train travel in South India is about to get a major visual upgrade. Southern Railway has introduced its first Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328), providing passengers a unique opportunity to travel between the temple towns
of Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala. This isn't just another train; it's a moving viewpoint designed to showcase the region's spectacular natural beauty. The highlight of the journey is the scenic ghat section between Sengottai and Kollam, winding through the lush landscapes of the Western Ghats, including the picturesque Aryankavu pass. The service has been specifically scheduled to pass through this stunning terrain during the daytime, allowing travellers to fully appreciate the views, unlike other trains on the route that often traverse the area at night.
What Makes This Coach 'Panoramic'?
The term 'Vistadome' refers to a specially designed tourist coach aimed at enhancing the sightseeing experience. These executive air-conditioned coaches feature massive, wide glass windows that stretch across the carriage, offering unobstructed views. But the star attraction is the transparent glass roof, allowing passengers to look up at the sky and the towering green canopy of the forests. To ensure every passenger gets the best possible view, the seats are designed to be rotatable. This combination of features creates an immersive experience, making passengers feel like they are travelling through nature rather than just past it. The introduction of these coaches was made possible after the train line was upgraded to accommodate modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes earlier in 2026.
The Trial Run: Dates and Details
This exciting new service is currently in a trial phase to gauge passenger demand and operational feasibility. The Vistadome coach began its run from Madurai on October 22, 2026, with the trial period extending until mid-January 2027. The service does not run daily. For train number 16327, leaving from Madurai, the coach is available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In the return direction, on train number 16328 from Guruvayur, it operates on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This schedule was chosen to coincide with peak tourist seasons and holidays. Bookings, which are already open, can be made under the 'EV' or Executive Class code.
Fares and Early Response
Southern Railway has announced a basic fare starting at Rs 515 for the Executive Vistadome coach. The total cost for the entire journey from Madurai to Guruvayur is approximately Rs 1,875, though fares can vary. The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive. Shortly after bookings opened, tickets for the inaugural weekend journeys were quickly snapped up, with several dates showing a waitlist. This strong demand highlights the public's excitement for a premium, scenic travel option connecting the two states. Rail passenger associations and travel enthusiasts have lauded the move as a significant milestone for regional tourism.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
The introduction of the Vistadome coach is seen as a major boost for tourism in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By connecting two major pilgrimage destinations with a visually stunning journey, the railway is creating a new travel experience that appeals to tourists, families, and nature lovers alike. The daytime schedule through the ghats is a key attraction, encouraging travellers to explore destinations along the route and potentially benefiting local economies. If the trial run proves successful, it could pave the way for the expansion of similar scenic rail services on other picturesque routes across South India, redefining leisure travel in the region.
