A Path Paved with Gold
Dubai is preparing to add another world-first to its long list of superlatives: a permanent walkway made of 24-carat gold. The project, set to be unveiled within the Dubai Gold District, is being billed as the longest of its kind in the world. According
to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the district, the attraction is expected to open to the public before the end of 2026, with some reports suggesting it could be ready within two months. The announcement was made in late October 2026, creating a buzz around what promises to be a unique experience for both tourists and residents. The walkway will allow visitors to literally stroll along a path of pure gold, cementing Dubai's reputation for creating lavish and unforgettable attractions.
More Than Just an Attraction
While the idea of a golden path is certainly a powerful tourist magnet, the project has a deeper purpose. It is a strategic move to reinforce Dubai's status as a global hub for gold trading and luxury tourism. The walkway is the headline feature of the newly launched Dubai Gold District in Deira, a massive development project by Ithra Dubai which opened in January 2026. This purpose-built destination aims to consolidate every aspect of the gold industry, from wholesale trading and investment services to over 1,000 retail stores selling jewellery, precious stones, and more. By creating a landmark attraction within this commercial hub, officials hope to draw international attention and footfall, benefiting the hundreds of businesses operating there.
A District in Demand
The announcement of the gold walkway comes at a time of significant growth for the Dubai Gold District. Since the beginning of 2026, the area has already seen a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores for jewellery and luxury watches. To meet this surging demand, further expansion of office and retail spaces is already underway. Officials project that the number of companies moving their operations to the district will grow by another 10% to 20% in the coming year. The district is also planning to host a major exhibition, with the goal of creating the largest gold and jewellery trade event in the entire Middle East. The walkway is therefore a glittering centrepiece for a rapidly expanding and economically vital area.
Putting the 'Gold' in Gold Souk
The new Dubai Gold District is an extension and modernization of the area surrounding the city's historic Gold Souk in Deira. This urban regeneration project aims to preserve the heritage of the old market while upgrading its infrastructure for modern commerce and tourism. The idea for a 'Gold Street' was first floated back in January 2026 during the district's official launch. While full details on the walkway's exact length, cost, and the quantity of gold being used remain under wraps, the commitment to using 24nd carat gold has been repeatedly confirmed by officials. This project is not just about building a path; it's about creating a powerful symbol for a district that welcomed visitors from over 147 nationalities in 2025 alone.
