While most of India settles into the post-monsoon season, the hills of Shillong come alive with a rare spectacle: a sea of pink. The city's unique autumn cherry blossoms offer a breathtaking sight for travellers this November.
An Autumnal Bloom Unlike Any Other
Unlike the famous spring
cherry blossoms of Japan, Shillong's display comes from the Himalayan Wild Cherry tree, or Prunus cerasoides. These trees burst into bloom in late October and early November, making Shillong the host of one of the world's only autumn cherry blossom festivals. The cool, crisp air of November in Meghalaya provides the perfect climate for these flowers to thrive, transforming the city's landscapes into a picturesque canvas of pink and white against lush green hills just as winter begins to approach. The bloom typically lasts for about two to three weeks, creating a fleeting and magical window for visitors to experience this natural wonder.
When and Where to See the Blossoms
The peak bloom for Shillong's cherry blossoms is generally within the first two weeks of November. One of the best ways to experience the season is during the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, which in 2026 is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. However, you don't need a festival ticket to enjoy the flowers. The trees are scattered across the city, creating stunning public displays. Key viewing spots include Ward's Lake, where the pink flowers reflect beautifully in the water, and the expansive Shillong Golf Course, where blossoms contrast with the pine trees. Other excellent locations are Lady Hydari Park, the roads around the Polo Grounds, and the scenic drive towards Upper Shillong.
More Than a Floral Spectacle
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has grown into a major cultural and music event. For 2026, the festival is confirmed for November 20th and 21st, featuring a lineup of international and national artists. While previous editions were held at the Polo Ground, the event is shifting to a new, larger venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds to accommodate its growing popularity. Beyond the main stage, the festival is a celebration of Meghalayan culture. Visitors can explore food stalls offering local Khasi cuisine, browse through arts and crafts, and enjoy various cultural performances that showcase the region's rich heritage. Even outside the festival grounds, illuminated blossoms at night, especially around Ward's Lake, create a magical atmosphere.
Planning Your November Trip
Reaching Shillong is most convenient through Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is wellconnected to major Indian cities. From Guwahati, it's a scenic threehour drive to Shillong, with taxis and buses readily available. Shillong's own airport at Umroi (SHL) has limited connectivity. Given the festival's popularity, it is highly advisable to book accommodation several weeks in advance, as hotels fill up quickly during November. The weather during this time is generally pleasant and cool, but evenings can get chilly, so packing warm clothing is recommended. For a complete experience, consider dedicating a day or two simply to exploring the city's charming streets and cafes, discovering unexpected pockets of blooming cherry trees.
