Choose Your Riverside Haven
The heart of Meghalaya's river camping scene is the Umngot River, with Shnongpdeng village being the top choice for budget travellers. While Dawki is famous for its iconic clear-water boat photos, it's more of a day-trip spot. Shnongpdeng, just a few
kilometres upstream, is where the real camping experience unfolds. It's less crowded and offers a wider range of campsites run by local Khasi families. Basic tent stays here can cost as little as ₹400-₹500 per person for just the tent and bedding. Most travellers opt for packages ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per person, which typically include a tent, bedding, a simple dinner, and breakfast. Choosing Shnongpdeng means your money directly supports the local community and you get a more authentic, peaceful experience.
Getting There Without Breaking the Bank
Transportation is often the biggest expense in a Meghalaya trip, but it doesn't have to be. The most economical way to reach the river camps is by shared transport. From Shillong's Anjali Point or Bada Bazaar, you can find shared Sumo taxis heading towards Dawki. A seat costs around ₹400-₹500. From Dawki, a short local ride of about 8 km will get you to Shnongpdeng for a minimal fee. This method requires some patience as shared taxis can have unpredictable schedules. For those in a small group, hiring a private taxi for a day trip loop that includes other sights like Mawlynnong can be cost-effective when the price is split, with full-day cabs costing between ₹3,000 and ₹4,500.
Embrace Low-Cost Adventures
The beauty of river camping is that the best experiences are often free. Swimming in the clear, cool water of the Umngot, relaxing on the riverbank, and stargazing at night cost nothing. For a bit of adrenaline, adventure activities are offered at very reasonable prices. A boat ride, which is a must-do, can cost between ₹500 and ₹800 for the whole boat, so sharing with a group makes it cheaper. Other popular activities include kayaking (around ₹500), snorkeling (around ₹500), and guided cliff jumping, which can be as low as ₹200-₹500 per person, including a life jacket. By being selective with paid activities, you can easily keep your daily budget in check.
Eat Smart and Local
While most camping packages include dinner and breakfast, you can save more by exploring local food options. Campsite meals are convenient but basic, usually consisting of rice, dal, vegetables, and an option of chicken or pork. For lunch and snacks, seek out the small dhabas and local eateries in the nearby villages. A full Khasi thali at one of these spots can cost as little as ₹80-₹120, offering an authentic taste of the region for a fraction of the price of tourist-centric restaurants. Always carry some cash, as digital payments can be unreliable due to poor network connectivity in these remote areas. It's recommended to carry at least ₹3,000 in cash.
Perfect Timing for a Perfect Budget Trip
The best time for river camping in Meghalaya is from October to April. During these post-monsoon and winter months, the river is at its clearest, revealing the stunning riverbed that makes it famous. The weather is pleasant for outdoor activities, and the nights are cool and ideal for a bonfire. Travelling during the weekdays or in the shoulder months of October, March, and April can sometimes result in lower prices and thinner crowds compared to the peak season of December and January. Camping is generally suspended during the monsoon season (May to September) as the river becomes murky and water levels rise significantly.
