Synthetic video, widely known as 'deepfakes', is content created or manipulated using artificial intelligence. This technology can generate hyper-realistic videos, audio, and images, often depicting real people saying or doing things they never did. While
some uses are for entertainment or creative expression, the potential for malicious use—from financial scams to political misinformation—is significant. As the technology advances, it becomes harder to distinguish authentic content from AI-generated fabrications, making digital literacy a critical defense.
Visual Red Flags to Watch For
The eyes and face are often where AI models still make mistakes. Look for unnatural eye movements, such as a lack of blinking or blinking that appears too mechanical. Skin might look unnaturally smooth, almost like plastic, or too wrinkly for the person's age. Other visual tells include flickering or blurry edges around the subject, especially around hair, where the synthetic face is blended with the original video. Inconsistent lighting and shadows that don't match the environment are also common signs of manipulation.
Anatomical and Background Glitches
Beyond the face, other details can expose a fake. AI generators often struggle with rendering anatomically correct hands and fingers, resulting in extra digits or unnatural shapes. Look for inconsistencies in the background; objects might appear distorted or text on signs could be garbled. Even small details like jewelry or reflections in glasses can be a giveaway. If a person is wearing glasses, check if the reflections match the surrounding environment; AI may fail to represent the natural physics of light.
Listen for Audio Inconsistencies
Your ears are just as important as your eyes in detecting synthetic media. One of the most reliable indicators is a mismatch between lip movements and the spoken words. Cloned voices can sound flat, robotic, or lack emotional tone, even in situations that call for it. Listen for an absence of natural background noise or breathing sounds between words. Sometimes, the audio might sound too clean, or you might hear strange artifacts like blips or sudden changes in pitch, indicating manipulation.
Think Before You Share
Beyond technical analysis, critical thinking is your strongest tool. Before sharing a shocking or emotionally charged video, pause and consider the source. Is it coming from a reputable news organization or a random, unverified account? Look for other reports from trusted sources that either confirm or debunk the video's claims. Urgent requests for action, money, or sensitive information paired with a familiar face should be treated with extreme caution and verified through a separate, trusted channel.
The Role of Detection Tools
While human observation is key, technology is also evolving to fight back. Researchers and companies have developed deepfake detection tools that analyze videos for telltale signs of manipulation. Some programs detect mismatches between mouth movements and audio sounds, while others look for subtle changes in color that indicate blood flow in a real person's face. Other initiatives focus on watermarking AI-generated content at the source to make it identifiable. While no single tool is foolproof, they represent an important layer in the fight against deceptive media.
