The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow alert' for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which includes Palghar and Raigad, effective until July 2. [15] This alert signifies the likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning, moderate rainfall,

Why Palghar and Raigad Are Vulnerable
The geographical makeup of the Palghar-Raigad belt, part of the Konkan coast, makes it particularly susceptible to monsoon fury. The region features a combination of low-lying coastal areas, numerous rivers, and hilly terrain from the Western Ghats. This topography creates a high risk of both urban flooding and landslides. Heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems in towns and cities, while saturating the soil on slopes, leading to potentially dangerous landslides, a recurring issue in Raigad during heavy monsoon spells. The region has a history of facing such natural calamities, making preparedness a critical annual exercise.
Expected Impacts and Disruptions
Residents should anticipate several disruptions. The IMD has warned that the downpours may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and potential disruptions to transport services, including road, rail, and air traffic. [23] Already, early morning rains on June 29 have caused waterlogging in some areas like the Andheri subway in Mumbai. [15] Key transport arteries, such as the Mumbai-Goa and Mumbai-Ahmedabad highways that pass through these districts, are often affected by poor visibility and water accumulation. There is also a risk of damage to standing crops and temporary power outages. Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. [14]
