The Science of the Slump
It’s a feeling many of us can relate to: after skimping on sleep, the motivation to do anything productive vanishes. Now, a controlled trial from researchers at Columbia University has put a number on this phenomenon. The study, published in the journal
Annals of Internal Medicine, found that even a realistic amount of sleep loss has a measurable effect. Researchers had a group of adults go through two six-week phases: one with their normal sleep schedule, and another where they cut their sleep short by about 80 minutes per night. The results were clear. During the sleep-restricted period, participants spent an average of 17 more minutes per day being sedentary. For men and postmenopausal women, that number nearly doubled to almost 30 extra minutes of inactivity daily. What's more, this happened even after researchers accounted for the simple fact that participants were awake for longer. Over the six weeks, they also gained an average of one pound.
Why Less Sleep Means More Sitting
So, what’s happening in our bodies and brains when we’re sleep-deprived? It’s not just about physical tiredness; it’s about motivation and decision-making. Sleep plays a critical role in regulating brain chemicals like dopamine, which helps us weigh whether a task is worth the effort. When you're running on fumes, your brain’s reward system is thrown off balance. Tasks that require effort, like going for a walk or hitting the gym, feel much more difficult, while low-effort activities like scrolling on your phone or watching TV become more appealing. This isn’t a failure of willpower; it’s a biological shift. Lack of sleep also affects emotional regulation, making you feel more exhausted and less resilient. This emotional drain directly saps your motivation, making it easier to choose the couch over the treadmill. Other hormonal changes also kick in, such as an increase in ghrelin, the 'hunger hormone', which can lead to overeating and further contribute to a feeling of lethargy.
A Vicious Cycle of Inactivity
The link between sleep and activity is a two-way street, creating a potentially vicious cycle. Poor sleep leads to more sedentary behaviour, but a sedentary lifestyle can also harm your ability to get good-quality sleep. This creates a trap that can be difficult to escape. You’re too tired to exercise, but the lack of exercise might be one of the reasons you’re not sleeping well in the first place. The good news is that this cycle can also work in your favour. Research has shown that regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to improve sleep quality, particularly the deep, restorative sleep our bodies need for recovery. By making a conscious effort to break the chain—even with light activity—you can start turning the vicious cycle into a virtuous one, where better activity promotes better sleep, which in turn gives you more energy for activity.
Small Steps to Break the Cycle
If you're caught in a pattern of poor sleep and low energy, the idea of a full workout can feel impossible. The key is to start small. You don't need to run a marathon; focus on simply reducing your sedentary time. Try incorporating 'movement snacks' into your day. Set a timer to get up and walk around for five minutes every hour. Take a brief walk during your lunch break. Choose the stairs instead of the lift. These small bursts of activity can help boost your energy and mood without feeling overwhelming. At the same time, work on improving your sleep hygiene. Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake time, even on weekends. Create a relaxing pre-sleep routine, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. Avoiding screens for at least an hour before bed can also make a significant difference in helping your brain wind down and prepare for rest.
