study, AI already performs 37% of entry-level tasks in India, a figure higher than the global average. Jobs like data entry, L1 technical support, and certain back-office processing roles are highly susceptible to automation. This is because AI models excel at handling structured data and predictable queries, which form the core of these positions. While this has led to workforce reductions and hiring slowdowns at major IT firms, it doesn't spell the end of these functions, but rather a deep transformation.
From Coder to AI Collaborator
For developers, the job is not disappearing but evolving into a partnership with AI. AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot are acting as assistants, generating code snippets and automating debugging. This boosts developer productivity by as much as 50%, freeing them from writing boilerplate code. As a result, the value of a developer is shifting from pure code creation to higher-level skills. The new focus is on system architecture, complex problem-solving, and validating the output of AI tools. Expertise in prompt engineering—the art of instructing AI models effectively—and integrating AI systems securely is becoming more critical than manual, line-by-line coding. The future is less about writing every command and more about orchestrating AI to build robust systems.
A New Chapter for Project Managers
Project and program management roles are also undergoing a significant shift. AI tools can now automate many of the administrative burdens of management, such as generating progress reports, predicting project timelines, and optimising resource allocation. This allows managers to step away from micromanagement and focus on more strategic responsibilities. With AI handling the 'what' and 'when', human managers can concentrate on the 'why' and 'who'. This means more time spent on complex stakeholder negotiations, creative problem-solving, and mentoring team members—areas where human judgment, empathy, and contextual understanding remain irreplaceable. Senior roles are seen as less at risk because AI acts as a force multiplier, enhancing their decision-making capabilities.
The Dawn of AI-Native Careers
While some roles are contracting, AI is simultaneously creating entirely new categories of jobs that barely existed a few years ago. There is a surging demand for AI specialists, machine learning engineers, and data scientists who can build, train, and deploy sophisticated AI models. Beyond these core technical roles, a new ecosystem of jobs is emerging. These include AI ethicists, who ensure models are fair and unbiased; AI integration specialists, who help companies adopt these new technologies; and AI model trainers and data curators, who are essential for preparing the vast datasets that power these systems. Companies are increasingly prioritising demonstrable skills and certifications over traditional degrees, opening new pathways into the tech industry.
The Urgent Need for Upskilling
The common thread across all these changes is the critical importance of adaptation. A NASSCOM report found that 86% of Indian firms have already seen AI impact job roles. The future of IT employment in India will be defined by a 'two-tier' labour market, where demand weakens for routine tasks but grows for specialised AI skills. This creates an urgent need for upskilling and reskilling. Professionals must transition from being task-doers to becoming strategic thinkers who can work alongside AI. The most valuable skills are becoming less about technical execution and more about human-centric capabilities: critical thinking, creativity, strategic planning, and the judgment to know when an AI-generated solution is right and when it's not. The message from the industry is clear: the ability to learn and adapt is the new job security.
