the tourism authority. To be eligible, you must be an Indian passport holder whose travel originates in India. The scheme is designed to make dedicated Abu Dhabi holidays more affordable and is available for a limited time, running for travel between August 1 and October 31, 2026. The program is also limited to the first 20,000 applicants during this pilot period, making early booking advisable.
Bookings That Qualify for the Holiday Offer
Eligibility for this free visa is tied directly to the type of trip you book. The core requirement is purchasing a complete holiday package through a participating travel partner or online travel agency, such as Akbar Travels. Independent bookings for flights and hotels will not qualify. The package itself must include two key components: a return flight from India and a hotel stay in Abu Dhabi for a minimum of three consecutive nights. Simply booking a flight and a hotel separately, even for the correct duration, will not grant you access to this offer. The visa cost is waived as part of the qualifying package deal.
What Does Not Qualify for the Holiday Offer
It is crucial to understand the scenarios that fall outside this specific promotion. You will not receive a free visa under this scheme if you book your flights and hotel independently, even if you meet the three-night minimum. Likewise, booking through a travel agent that is not an official partner in the DCT Abu Dhabi program will render you ineligible. Stays shorter than three consecutive nights or travel plans outside the August 1 to October 31, 2026 window will also not qualify. This initiative is aimed at boosting tourism with dedicated holiday packages, so it does not apply to transit passengers or those making their own travel arrangements.
The Other Option: The Transit Visa
Separate from the holiday package is the UAE's longstanding transit visa program, which is often a source of confusion. The UAE government provides a 48-hour transit visa that allows travelers with long layovers to explore the city. This option is available to passengers of many nationalities, including Indians, who are transiting through Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport on a UAE-based airline like Etihad Airways. To qualify, your layover must typically be at least eight hours, and you must hold a confirmed ticket to a third destination. While official government sources describe the 48-hour visa as free of charge, airlines that process the application often add a service fee, so it may not be entirely without cost. For longer stays, a 96-hour transit visa is available for a higher fee.
When a Transit Visa Isn't for You
The transit visa is only for those passing through Abu Dhabi en route to another country. You do not need one if you are not leaving the airport during your layover, or if your connection is less than eight hours. This visa also won't apply if you are flying on airlines that do not facilitate the application process or if your trip is a simple return journey to Abu Dhabi without an onward flight to a different country. Furthermore, some travelers may be eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival if they hold valid residence permits or visas from countries like the US, UK, or the EU, which is a separate, paid process.
