Your bedding creates a 'microclimate' right next to your skin. If your mattress, sheets, or duvet are made from materials that trap heat and moisture, they will counteract the effects of a cool room. Your body naturally sheds heat and moisture throughout the night. If your bedding isn't breathable, that heat and humidity get trapped, causing you to overheat and disrupting your sleep. Some materials are excellent at allowing heat and moisture to escape, while others act like insulators, trapping them against your body. Memory foam mattresses, for example, are known for their comfort but can often retain a significant amount of body heat. Similarly, sheets made from synthetic fabrics like polyester or microfiber tend to be less breathable than natural fibres. The weave of the fabric also matters. A tight weave, like sateen, can feel smooth but may trap more heat than a looser, more open weave like percale. The key is to select bedding that promotes airflow and wicks away moisture, allowing your body to effectively regulate its own temperature throughout the different stages of sleep.

Choosing the right fabric can transform your sleep experience, especially if you tend to sleep hot. Here’s a quick guide to some of the best options: Cotton percale is a top choice for hot sleepers. Its crisp, one-over-one weave is highly breathable, allowing air to circulate freely. Linen, made from the flax plant, is another excellent option, renowned for its exceptional airflow and ability to absorb moisture without feeling damp, making it ideal for humid climates. Fabrics derived from wood pulp, such as Tencel or Lyocell, are also great choices; they are soft, smooth, and highly effective at wicking moisture away from the skin. Bamboo-derived fabrics offer similar cooling and moisture-wicking properties. For duvet fillings, natural options like down or wool are surprisingly effective at temperature regulation, as they are more breathable than many synthetic alternatives which can trap heat.
