a critical variable: high humidity. When the air is already saturated with moisture, sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. This combination of heat and humidity creates a condition health experts call “uncompensable heat stress,” where the body simply cannot cool itself, leading to a rapid and dangerous rise in core temperature. Your body is constantly working to maintain a stable internal temperature. When you get hot, your heart pumps more blood to the skin's surface and you begin to sweat. The problem with high humidity is that this system breaks down. With sweat unable to evaporate, your body continues to produce it, leading to significant fluid and salt loss without the cooling benefit. This can quickly lead to dehydration, which further reduces your body's ability to cool itself and places immense strain on the cardiovascular system. This is why you can feel weak, dizzy, and exhausted even on a cloudy but humid monsoon day. It's crucial to know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, as they can progress quickly in humid conditions. The first stage is often heat cramps, which involve painful muscle spasms. This can escalate to heat exhaustion. Symptoms include heavy sweating; cool, pale, or clammy skin; a fast, weak pulse; nausea; dizziness; and headache. If not treated promptly by moving to a cool place and rehydrating, heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, which is a life-threatening medical emergency. Signs of heatstroke include a high body temperature (above 103°F or 39.4°C), hot and red skin (which may be dry or damp), a rapid and strong pulse, confusion, slurred speech, and potential loss of consciousness. If heatstroke is suspected, you must call for emergency medical help immediately.
Expert Advice for Staying Safe
The WHO and other health organizations provide clear, actionable advice to mitigate the risks of humid heat. Hydration is paramount: drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, typically late morning to late afternoon. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton to allow for any possible air circulation. If possible, spend a few hours in a cool, air-conditioned space to give your body a break. Taking cool showers or baths can also help lower your body temperature. Protecting the Most Vulnerable
Certain groups are at a much higher risk during periods of high heat and humidity.
