The critical corridor between Bengaluru and Mumbai just got a significant upgrade. The newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper Express promises to redefine overnight travel, slashing journey times and introducing a new level of comfort and speed.
A Landmark Launch for Two Metros
On November
1, 2026, the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off from Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT), marking a new chapter in Indian Railways. This service directly connects India's IT capital with its financial powerhouse, Mumbai, addressing a long-standing demand for faster and more efficient rail connectivity on this high-traffic route. Unlike its chair-car siblings, this is a dedicated sleeper train, designed from the ground up for comfortable overnight journeys. It is expected to be a game-changer for professionals, tourists, and families who frequently travel between the two bustling cities. Regular services are set to commence from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3.
Slashing Travel Time Significantly
The most compelling feature of the new service is the dramatic reduction in travel time. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is scheduled to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours. For instance, the train departing SMVT Bengaluru (Train No. 27652) at 7:45 PM will reach Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 11:55 AM the next day. This is a massive improvement over existing trains like the Udyan Express, which take nearly 24 hours for the same route. This time-saving of seven to eight hours means passengers can save a full working morning, arriving fresh and ready for their day. The train will run six days a week, excluding Mondays from Bengaluru and Tuesdays from Mumbai.
Inside the Modern Sleeper Coach
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets are engineered for a premium passenger experience. The 16-coach rake, with a capacity for 823 passengers, offers three classes: AC First Class, AC 2nd Tier, and AC 3rd Tier. The interiors are designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, with features aimed at maximizing comfort. Berths are ergonomically designed with better cushioning, and ambient, sensor-based lighting creates a soothing atmosphere. For convenience, there are ample charging points, including both standard sockets and USB ports. The coaches are also designed for a smoother, jerk-free ride with superior noise insulation, ensuring a quieter journey.
Enhanced Safety and Amenities
Safety is a cornerstone of the Vande Bharat platform. The sleeper express is equipped with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, advanced fire detection and suppression systems, and CCTV cameras throughout the coaches for enhanced security. Passenger amenities have also been upgraded significantly. The train features modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, similar to those found in aircraft. Passengers in First AC will have access to hot water shower facilities. Automatic plug doors, sealed gangways for easy movement between coaches, and integrated passenger information systems further contribute to a safe and convenient travel experience.
Route, Stoppages, and Booking Details
The train will connect key cities across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The scheduled stops between Bengaluru and Mumbai are Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan. Ticket bookings for the service have already commenced. As per initial fare charts, a journey from Bengaluru to Mumbai costs ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹4,450 for AC First Class. These fares are competitive, offering a premium alternative to existing trains and a cost effective option compared to air travel especially when factoring in airport transit time and costs.
