While many associate cherry blossoms with spring in Japan, India has its own breathtaking spectacle. Every autumn, the hills of Meghalaya transform into a sea of pink, offering a unique and magical experience for all who visit.
An Autumn Phenomenon
The main attraction is the
Himalayan cherry blossom, or Prunus cerasoides. Unlike its Japanese counterpart which blooms in spring, this hardy, native species flourishes in the autumn months, typically from late October through November. This unique timing makes Meghalaya the host of the world's only autumn cherry blossom festival. The bloom coincides with the end of the monsoon season, resulting in clear blue skies and cool, pleasant weather, creating perfect conditions for sightseeing and photography. The crisp air, with daytime temperatures in Shillong often between 12°C and 20°C, is ideal for exploring the outdoors.
A Photographer's Paradise
For photographers, the appeal is undeniable. The soft, five-petalled pink and white flowers stand in stunning contrast to the lush greenery of the Khasi Hills and the deep blue of the post-monsoon sky. The soft light of the autumn sun, particularly during the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon, illuminates the blossoms, making them appear to glow. Reflections of the pink canopies in the calm waters of lakes like Ward's Lake provide opportunities for breathtaking shots. This seasonal colour palette transforms the entire landscape, turning ordinary streets and hillsides into extraordinary photo opportunities.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival
Capitalising on this natural event, Meghalaya hosts the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. While the flowers are the main star, the event has grown into a major international music and cultural festival, attracting artists and visitors from around the globe. The festival combines live music performances, from traditional Khasi folk music to international rock and pop acts, with stalls showcasing local cuisine, wine, arts, and crafts. This celebration offers a vibrant blend of nature and culture, making it a major draw on the region's tourism calendar.
Where to Find the Blooms
The blossoms can be found across Shillong and the surrounding hills, but some spots are particularly renowned for their dense displays. Ward's Lake, located in the heart of the city, is a premier location where the blooming trees line the water's edge. The Shillong Golf Course offers a picturesque scene with cherry trees dotting the rolling green fairways. Other key areas include the Polo Grounds, which has historically been a festival hub, Lady Hydari Park, and the roads leading towards Upper Shillong. For those venturing further, the drive from Guwahati to Shillong and the forests around Mawphlang also showcase these beautiful autumn flowers.
Planning Your Visit
November is considered one of the best months to visit Meghalaya, not just for the blooms but for the overall excellent weather. With rain being rare, it's a great time to explore other attractions like the clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki or the majestic viewpoints at Laitlum Canyon. However, because this is peak season, it is highly advisable to book accommodation and travel well in advance, especially if your trip coincides with the festival dates when Shillong becomes particularly busy. Even if you don't attend the ticketed festival, the blossoms themselves can be enjoyed freely in public spaces across the city.
