The Science of Monsoon Dampness
During the monsoon, the air becomes saturated with water vapour, causing a dramatic spike in relative humidity. When this warm, moisture-laden air enters your cooler home, it hits surfaces like walls, floors, and furniture. This contact causes the water vapour to
condense into liquid, leading to the damp feeling and visible moisture patches you see. This process is especially intense in homes that use air conditioning, as the cold surfaces create a prime target for condensation. Essentially, your home struggles to deal with the sudden and overwhelming amount of moisture in the air, a stark contrast to the dry heat of the preceding summer months.
The Health Risks of a Damp Home
Persistent dampness is more than a structural concern; it creates the perfect breeding ground for mould, mildew, and dust mites. Exposure to mould can trigger a range of health issues, including allergic reactions like sneezing, skin rashes, and red eyes. For individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, it can worsen symptoms and lead to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Studies have shown that damp environments are associated with a 30-50% increase in various respiratory and asthma-related problems, making it crucial to manage indoor humidity.
Improve Air Circulation
Your first line of defence against dampness is promoting good airflow. Stagnant air allows moisture to settle on surfaces, so keeping it moving is critical. Whenever there's a break in the rain, open windows and doors for at least 15-30 minutes to allow fresh, drier air to circulate and push out the humid indoor air. Running ceiling or table fans, even on a low setting, helps prevent condensation from forming on walls and furniture. Also, ensure you leave a gap of at least a few inches between large furniture and walls to allow air to flow freely behind them.
Use Natural Dehumidifiers
You don't always need an electric dehumidifier to fight moisture. Several common household items are excellent at absorbing excess water from the air. Placing bowls of rock salt or baking soda in problem areas like closets, under sinks, and in damp corners can effectively draw in moisture. Activated charcoal and silica gel packets, often found in new shoe boxes or electronic packaging, work wonders in smaller, enclosed spaces like drawers and wardrobes. For a greener touch, certain houseplants like Spider Plants, Peace Lilies, and English Ivy are known to absorb humidity through their leaves.
Protect Your Wardrobe and Belongings
Closets and cupboards are hotspots for musty smells and mildew during the monsoon. Ensure clothes are completely dry before storing them; even slight dampness can lead to fungal growth. You can hang moisture-absorbing pouches filled with camphor, naphthalene balls, or dried neem leaves inside your wardrobe. These not only absorb dampness but also act as natural pest repellents. For extra protection, consider placing a low-wattage bulb inside larger wardrobes to generate gentle warmth, which helps keep the area dry and inhospitable to mildew. Never store items in plastic covers, which trap moisture; opt for breathable fabric bags instead.
Pay Attention to Kitchens and Bathrooms
These two rooms are major sources of indoor humidity due to cooking and bathing. Always use an exhaust fan when showering or cooking to vent steam and moisture directly outside. Wipe down wet surfaces, including countertops, shower walls, and floors, immediately after use. Regularly check for and fix any leaking pipes or faucets, as these contribute significantly to the overall moisture level in your home. A small bowl of baking soda placed in the bathroom or kitchen can help absorb ambient moisture and odours.
