Great news for travellers: the much-awaited faster train service between Bengaluru and Goa is here. The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express that will connect the two popular destinations, cutting the journey to around 13 hours.
Introducing the Yesvantpur-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express
The Railway
Board has officially approved the introduction of the Yesvantpur-Madgaon-Yesvantpur Vande Bharat Express, a modern, semi-high-speed train service. This new daytime chair car service is a significant upgrade for one of India's most popular travel corridors, connecting Karnataka's tech hub with Goa's coastal paradise. The service is expected to be launched in the third week of November 2026, though an exact date is yet to be finalised. This development follows the successful electrification of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway line, which was completed in late 2025, paving the way for faster and more efficient electric train operations.
Timings and Schedule Details
The service will run six days a week in each direction. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur (Bengaluru) at 7:35 AM and is scheduled to arrive at Madgaon (Goa) at 8:55 PM, making the journey approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes. This service will operate on all days except Wednesdays. In the return direction, train number 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, with a slightly shorter travel time of 12 hours and 55 minutes. The return service will not run on Thursdays. The introduction of this train will also lead to the discontinuation of the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express.
Route and Scenic Highlights
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its route through the picturesque Western Ghats. The train will travel via Mangaluru Junction, with 12 stops in between, connecting several key towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal regions. Key stops include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya Road, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar. The stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is particularly known for its breathtaking scenery, offering passengers panoramic views of green hills, dense forests, and valley bridges, turning the journey itself into a memorable part of the holiday.
How It Compares to Other Travel Options
Previously, the fastest daily trains between Bengaluru and Goa, such as the Yesvantpur Vasco Da Gama Express, took between 13 hours 40 minutes to over 15 hours. While the new Vande Bharat offers a significant and more comfortable reduction in time compared to older rail services, it's important to weigh it against other modes of transport. Overnight buses typically take 12 to 14 hours, which is comparable in time but often less comfortable. A direct flight remains the fastest option, with a flight time of just over an hour, but this does not account for travel to and from airports, check_in times, and is generally the most expensive choice unless booked during a sale. The Vande Bharat Express aims to strike a balance, offering a relatively fast, comfortable, and scenic journey at a potentially competitive price point.
Booking Information and What to Expect
While official ticket fares are yet to be announced, passengers will be able to book their seats through the IRCTC website, mobile app, and official railway ticket counters once reservations open. The Vande Bharat trains are known for their modern amenities, including reclining seats, large windows for sightseeing, onboard Wi-Fi, and clean, accessible lavatories. As a chair car service, it provides a comfortable daytime travel experience. Given the high demand on this route, especially during holidays and long weekends, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance once they become available. Maintenance for the rakes will be handled at Yesvantpur and Madgaon.
