like Mumbai and Hyderabad reporting wait times of around 9.5 months as of mid-2026. Similarly, while the standard processing time for a Schengen visa is about 15 working days, peak season demand from April to July often stretches this to several weeks, with the entire process, including securing an appointment, taking up to two months or more. This uncertainty, coupled with rising airfares and a weakening rupee, has made these long-haul trips less appealing for spontaneous or budget-conscious travellers.
Asia's Welcoming Doors
In sharp contrast, many Southeast and East Asian countries are actively courting Indian tourists with simplified and streamlined entry procedures. This has led to a noticeable shift in travel patterns, with bookings for Asian destinations seeing a significant spike. Travel industry experts report a 25% to 35% rise in bookings for Asia, while European travel has seen a decline. Countries are leveraging visa-free entry, efficient e-visa portals, and visa-on-arrival facilities to attract a growing number of Indian families, couples, and solo explorers looking for a hassle-free international holiday.
Malaysia: Truly Asia, Truly Visa-Free
Malaysia has extended its visa-free entry policy for Indian passport holders through December 31, 2026. This allows for a stay of up to 30 days for tourism purposes, making it incredibly convenient to plan a trip. All that is required is a valid passport, proof of return tickets and accommodation, and the completion of the online Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within three days of arrival. This policy has made it easier than ever to explore the futuristic skyline of Kuala Lumpur, the colonial charm of Penang, or the pristine beaches of Langkawi without any visa-related stress.
Vietnam: The Rising Star with Easy E-Visas
Vietnam has rapidly become a favourite, thanks to its stunning landscapes and an incredibly efficient e-visa system. Indian citizens can apply online for an e-visa that allows for a stay of up to 90 days, with options for both single and multiple entries. The process is straightforward, with approvals typically granted within three to five business days. This accessibility has opened up a world of experiences, from cruising through Ha Long Bay's limestone karsts to exploring the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City and the ancient town of Hoi An, all at a budget-friendly price point.
Sri Lanka: The Emerald Isle, Now Visa-Free
Our island neighbour, Sri Lanka, is also offering free 30-day tourist visas for Indian citizens as of May 2026. While travellers still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before departure, the process is quick and the visa itself is free of cost. This makes it simple to plan a trip to explore ancient ruins, lush tea plantations, and beautiful coastlines. Visitors just need a valid passport, confirmed return tickets, and proof of sufficient funds for their stay.
Thailand: New Rules, Still Accessible
Thailand recently ended its popular visa-free scheme for Indians in May 2026, shifting back to a Visa on Arrival (VoA) system. While this adds a step, it remains a relatively straightforward process. Travellers can get a visa upon landing for a stay of up to 15 days. However, new rules issued in July 2026 require visitors using the VoA facility to carry proof of funds amounting to at least 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately ₹58,000) in cash, along with confirmed hotel and flight bookings. For a longer stay, a 60-day tourist e-visa can be arranged in advance.
