What is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, is a mandatory online pre-arrival form for all foreign nationals entering Malaysia, including Indian tourists. It has replaced the old paper-based landing cards to streamline the immigration process, making
your entry faster and more efficient. Think of it as a digital heads-up to the Malaysian Immigration Department about your visit. You must complete it before you travel, as it captures your personal details, passport information, and travel itinerary. Importantly, the MDAC is completely free to submit through the official government portal.
Visa-Free Entry vs. The MDAC
A common point of confusion is how the MDAC relates to Malaysia's visa-free policy for Indians. Until the end of 2026, Indian citizens can enter Malaysia for up to 30 days for tourism without needing a visa. However, visa-free status does not exempt you from filling out the MDAC. The two are separate requirements. The visa-free policy gives you permission to enter, while the MDAC is the mandatory registration of your arrival details. Every Indian tourist must complete the MDAC, regardless of their visa-free eligibility.
How and When to Apply
Timing is critical when it comes to the MDAC. You must fill out and submit the form within three days (or 72 hours) prior to your arrival in Malaysia. For example, if you are scheduled to land in Kuala Lumpur on August 20th, you can submit your form anytime from August 17th onwards. Filing it earlier than the three-day window will result in an invalid application. The application must be done online through the official portal of the Malaysian Immigration Department. Beware of unofficial websites that may charge a fee; the official process is free.
Step-by-Step Guide to Filling the Form
The MDAC form is straightforward but requires accuracy. First, visit the official MDAC website and click 'Register'. You will need to provide your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport, including your full name, passport number, and date of birth. Next, enter your travel information, such as your date of arrival and departure, mode of transport, and flight number. You'll also need to provide the full address of your accommodation in Malaysia, not just the hotel name. After filling in all the details, review them carefully for any typos before submitting. Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation, which you should save as a screenshot or PDF on your phone.
Arriving at Kuala Lumpur (KLIA)
Upon landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), you'll need to present your passport and the MDAC confirmation to the immigration officer. Indian passport holders who have successfully submitted the MDAC may also be eligible to use the automated e-gates (Autogate) for quicker clearance. These gates allow you to scan your passport and bypass the manual counters. However, first-time visitors to Malaysia might be required to enroll their biometrics at a manual counter on their initial visit. After this one-time enrollment, you can use the Autogates on subsequent trips.
Key Documents and Pro Tips
To ensure a seamless experience, have these documents ready. Your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of entry into Malaysia. You should also have proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket and details of your hotel reservation. While not always asked for, immigration officers may request to see evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A crucial tip is to double-check all information on the MDAC form before submission, as simple typos in your name or passport number can cause delays at immigration. Always use the official government website to avoid scams and unnecessary fees.
