While services can sometimes be disrupted by heavy rains and landslides, the experience of travelling through the clouds makes it a risk worth taking for many.
Mettupalayam to Ooty: Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, takes you on a steep ascent into the heart of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. The journey from Mettupalayam to the hill station of Ooty is particularly scenic during the monsoon when the surrounding tea plantations and eucalyptus forests are at their most vibrant. The vintage steam locomotive chugs through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges, offering intimate views of swollen streams and mist-draped landscapes. Vasco Da Gama to Londa: The Goa-Karnataka Route
