Mumbai to Goa: The Konkan Railway
Often called India’s most cinematic monsoon rail route, the Konkan Railway is an engineering marvel that comes alive during the rains. Winding its way through the Western Ghats, the journey from Mumbai to Goa features over 2,000 bridges and 92 tunnels.
During monsoon, the coaches are often level with the clouds, and countless waterfalls cascade down cliffs, some just metres from the tracks. The route offers a front-row seat to a dramatic spectacle of overflowing rivers and vibrant green valleys, making it a bucket-list trip for any train enthusiast. For the best views of the waterfalls, book a window seat on the left side of the train when travelling from Mumbai.
Kalka to Shimla: The Himalayan Queen
This UNESCO World Heritage toy train offers a magical journey through the Shivalik hills, which become even more enchanting during the monsoon. The narrow-gauge railway navigates over 800 bridges and through 102 tunnels on its way from Kalka to Shimla. The slow pace of the train allows you to soak in the views of mist-covered pine forests, rain-swept valleys, and quaint colonial-era stations. While services can sometimes be disrupted by heavy rains and landslides, the experience of travelling through the clouds makes it a risk worth taking for many.
Mettupalayam to Ooty: Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, takes you on a steep ascent into the heart of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. The journey from Mettupalayam to the hill station of Ooty is particularly scenic during the monsoon when the surrounding tea plantations and eucalyptus forests are at their most vibrant. The vintage steam locomotive chugs through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges, offering intimate views of swollen streams and mist-draped landscapes. While the full route can be prone to delays, the journey through the rain-washed hills is an experience of pure nostalgic charm.
Vasco Da Gama to Londa: The Goa-Karnataka Route
This journey takes you from the beaches of Goa to the Western Ghats of Karnataka, showcasing a stunning transition of landscapes. The highlight of this route is the breathtaking view of Dudhsagar Falls, one of India's tallest waterfalls. During the monsoon, the falls are at their most powerful and dramatic, and the train track passes very close, offering an unforgettable sight. The train winds through thick jungles and hugs the mountainside, providing a thrilling ride through the region's spectacular natural beauty, which is at its peak during the rainy season.
New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The iconic 'Toy Train' to Darjeeling provides spectacular views of the Eastern Himalayas, which become particularly mystical during the monsoon. As the train climbs from the plains, the world-famous tea gardens appear incredibly fresh and verdant under the rain, with clouds often drifting into the carriages. The journey past colonial-era stations and through the heart of Darjeeling town feels like a passage back in time. While the full route from New Jalpaiguri can be subject to disruptions from landslides, the shorter 'Joy Ride' from Darjeeling to Ghum often remains operational and covers the famous Batasia Loop.
Matheran Hill Railway: The Forest Train
This charming heritage narrow-gauge railway offers a peaceful escape into nature, running from Neral to the eco-sensitive hill station of Matheran in Maharashtra. The train winds through dense forest territory, navigating sharp curves as it ascends the hills of the Western Ghats. During the monsoon, the entire landscape is veiled in mist, and the forests are filled with small waterfalls, creating a slow and romantic ride. While full services from Neral are often suspended for safety during the peak monsoon months, shuttle services typically continue to run between Aman Lodge and Matheran, allowing visitors to experience the magic of the rain-soaked forest.
Jaipur to Jaisalmer: The Desert Queen
A monsoon train journey through Rajasthan offers a completely different but equally captivating experience. The trip from Jaipur to Jaisalmer on trains like the Leelan Express or Ranikhet Express cuts across the landscape just as the arid ground is refreshed by the rains. After the monsoon showers, the desert landscape can be surprisingly green, with unique flora blooming along the tracks. As the train moves deeper into the Thar Desert, you witness a unique spectacle of rain-washed dunes, dramatic skies, and a landscape that feels both vast and vibrant.
