Mumbai Indians have signaled a major strategic shift ahead of IPL 2027, overhauling their coaching staff. The five-time champions are bringing in a blend of decorated former players and a highly-rated specialist to reshape their backroom.
A New Era Under Pollard
The franchise
has installed a completely new coaching group under the leadership of new Head Coach Kieron Pollard. This move comes after a disappointing ninth-place finish in the 2026 season, prompting a significant reshuffle. The overhaul saw the departure of former head coach Mahela Jayawardene, along with bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. The new appointments clearly indicate a philosophy of bringing back individuals who are deeply familiar with the franchise's winning culture while infusing fresh tactical expertise. Pollard, who has a 16-year association with the team as a player and batting coach, now leads a group of coaches who understand the 'MI Way'.
Uthappa: The Tactical Batting Guru
Robin Uthappa's return to Mumbai Indians as Batting Coach is a significant move. Having played for MI in the inaugural 2008 season, Uthappa brings his journey full circle. A member of India's 2007 T20 World Cup winning squad, he possesses a wealth of experience. He was the Orange Cap winner in KKR's 2014 title run and also won an IPL trophy with CSK in 2021. Known for his sharp cricketing mind and clear communication, his primary role will be to mentor the batting unit, especially the younger players, and help them adapt to the ever-evolving T20 format. After retiring, Uthappa has also become a certified life coach, focusing on mental resilience, a skill that will be invaluable in the high-pressure environment of the IPL.
McClenaghan: Aggression and Familiarity
Mitchell McClenaghan's appointment as Bowling Coach brings back a figure synonymous with Mumbai's aggressive, title-winning ethos. The fiery New Zealand pacer was a cornerstone of the team from 2015 to 2020, winning four IPL titles in that period. He has been actively pursuing coaching qualifications since retirement with the stated goal of rejoining the franchise. His familiarity with the MI ecosystem is a huge plus, and he has already gained coaching experience with MI Emirates in the ILT20 and with Auckland Cricket. His task will be to instil his trademark competitive spirit and tactical nous into a bowling attack looking to regain its fearsome reputation.
Dilip: The Fielding Specialist
The hiring of T Dilip as Fielding Coach is a major coup for the franchise. Dilip joins after a hugely successful tenure with the Indian national team, where his innovative methods and the popular 'fielding medal' ceremony transformed the team's standards. He was a key part of the support staff during India's triumphs at the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Renowned for his meticulous planning and ability to motivate players, Dilip was the only member of Rahul Dravid's staff retained by new head coach Gautam Gambhir, a testament to his impact. His appointment signals Mumbai's intent to dominate every facet of the game.
Kulkarni: Grooming the Future
Completing the lineup is Dhawal Kulkarni, who takes on the role of Development Bowling Coach. This is a homecoming for the Mumbai domestic stalwart, who had two playing stints with the franchise, winning titles in 2013 and 2020. After retiring from cricket, Kulkarni expressed a strong desire to give back to the game and was appointed as a bowling mentor for the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). His role will be crucial for nurturing the next generation of Indian bowlers, working with them throughout the year to ensure a steady pipeline of talent for the main squad. It’s a move that reinforces MI’s commitment to building from the ground up.
