The popular journey between Bengaluru and Goa is set to become significantly faster and more comfortable. Indian Railways has greenlit a new Vande Bharat Express that will reduce rail travel time to just over 13 hours.
A New Vande Bharat Service
Indian Railways has officially approved
the introduction of a new semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express connecting Bengaluru and Goa. The new service, operating under train numbers 26655/26656, will connect Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa. This development is a significant upgrade for one of the most popular travel corridors in southern India, offering a faster and more modern travel option for thousands of passengers. The service is expected to launch in the third week of November 2026, although an exact date has not yet been finalised. With the introduction of this train, the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express will be discontinued.
How Much Faster Is the Journey?
The new Vande Bharat service promises a substantial reduction in travel time. The Yesvantpur to Madgaon journey (train no. 26655) is scheduled to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes. The return journey from Madgaon to Yesvantpur (train no. 26656) will be even quicker, clocking in at 12 hours and 55 minutes. This is a notable improvement compared to existing express trains on the route, which typically take between 14 to 15 hours. The time saving is largely attributed to the successful electrification of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway route, which was completed in late 2025 and allows for more efficient train operations.
Schedule and Stoppages
The train will operate six days a week. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 am and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 pm, with no service on Wednesdays. In the return direction, train number 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 am and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 pm, with services suspended on Thursdays. The train will halt at 12 stations, providing crucial connectivity to several towns in Karnataka before reaching Goa. The designated stops are Shravanabelagola, Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya Road, Kabaka Puttur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Kundapura, Mookambika Road Byndoor, Murdeshwar, Gokarna Road, and Karwar.
A Journey Through the Western Ghats
Beyond the speed, the journey itself is a major attraction. The route travels through the breathtaking Western Ghats, offering passengers spectacular views of lush landscapes, dense forests, and misty mountains. A particular highlight is the scenic stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road, renowned for its natural beauty. This route also famously passes near the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls, especially during the monsoon season, providing a visual treat for travellers. However, for safety reasons, speed restrictions will remain active in the ghat section, where the train will operate at a maximum of 30 kmph while covering the 55 km stretch.
This new service is part of a larger push by Indian Railways to modernise its network, enhance passenger experience, and reduce travel times on key routes. The introduction of more Vande Bharat trains, known for their modern amenities and faster speeds, is a cornerstone of this strategy. The electrification of the Bengaluru–Mangaluru line was a critical infrastructure project that paved the way for this faster service. For travellers, this means not only a quicker trip to the popular holiday destination of Goa but also improved connectivity to Karnataka's coastal towns like Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, making rail travel a more attractive option.
