For countless travellers, a waitlisted (WL) status on a train ticket means hours of uncertainty, often right up until the final chart is prepared just a few hours before departure. If a ticket remains waitlisted after the final chart preparation, it is automatically
cancelled for online bookings, and passengers cannot legally board the train. To tackle this, Indian Railways has been working on initiatives to give passengers information about their ticket status earlier. One of the most significant developments is the rollout of an AI-powered system designed to predict the confirmation chances of a waitlisted ticket with much higher accuracy. Reports indicate this new system, part of a major upgrade to the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) scheduled from August 2026, boosts prediction accuracy to as high as 94%. This allows passengers to make a more informed decision on whether to wait or look for alternatives.
The Vikalp Scheme: Your First Alternative
The primary tool offered by Indian Railways for alternative bookings is the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme, popularly known as 'Vikalp'. This free-of-charge facility allows passengers with waitlisted tickets to opt-in for the chance to get a confirmed berth in a different train on the same route. Passengers can select up to seven alternate trains when booking their ticket. If their original ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, the system automatically checks for vacant seats in the chosen Vikalp trains. It's important to note that opting for Vikalp does not guarantee a confirmed seat, but it significantly increases the probability. If a berth is allotted in an alternate train, the passenger is treated as a confirmed passenger on the new train and must travel on it; they cannot board their original train. The new train details are sent via SMS.
Proactively Finding Your Own Alternatives
While Vikalp is a useful tool, passengers should also be proactive. If the AI prediction for your ticket confirmation is low, it's wise to start looking for other options yourself. The first step is to search for other trains heading to your destination around the same date. Sometimes, less popular trains or trains from nearby stations may have available seats. Some booking platforms also offer a 'Guaranteed Seat Assistance' feature, which suggests booking a ticket from an earlier station or to a later station along the same route to secure a confirmed berth, even if you only travel your intended leg of the journey. This is a legitimate way to find a confirmed seat when your direct route is full.
Checking for Last-Minute Vacancies
Even after the first reservation chart is prepared (typically four hours before departure), there's still a window of opportunity. Indian Railways has a 'Charts/Vacancy' feature on the IRCTC website that allows anyone to see vacant berths available for booking in real-time. This is known as 'Current Booking'. These are seats that remained unsold or became available due to last-minute cancellations. These tickets are sold at the regular fare without any Tatkal charges. This can be a great option for passengers who are at the station and find their ticket has not been confirmed. You can book these seats online or at the current booking counter at the station right up until shortly before the train departs.
When to Consider Buses and Flights
If train options are exhausted and your travel is essential, it's time to look at other modes of transport. Inter-city bus services, including private luxury and sleeper coaches, have become a reliable alternative, especially for overnight journeys. Many online travel portals offer easy booking for these services. Similarly, for longer routes, a last-minute flight might be an option. While typically more expensive, booking a flight can sometimes be surprisingly competitive, especially if booked a few days in advance when you realize your train ticket has a low chance of confirmation.
