Nandi Hills: The Classic Sunrise Trek
A perennial favourite for a reason, Nandi Hills is the perfect introduction to trekking near Bengaluru. Located just 60 kilometres from the city, it’s an easy escape for a spectacular sunrise. The main trek follows a well-laid stone staircase of over
1,100 steps, winding through forests to the top. The climb is gentle, taking about 45 to 60 minutes, making it ideal for beginners and families. The real reward is watching the sun appear, often painting the sky gold above a sea of clouds. Beyond the sunrise, you can explore Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, visit ancient temples, and stand at Tipu's Drop, a 600-metre cliff offering panoramic views. The best months to visit are from October to February when the weather is cool and the sunrises are at their most dramatic. A pre-dawn start from Bengaluru (around 3 AM) is essential to catch the main event.
Skandagiri: The Thrilling Night Adventure
For those seeking a more adventurous experience, Skandagiri offers the thrill of a night trek culminating in a breathtaking sunrise. Located about 70 kilometres from Bengaluru, this trek is famous for the magical experience of climbing under a starlit sky to witness dawn break over a blanket of clouds. The trail is moderately difficult, covering a distance of about 8 kilometres round trip over rocky terrain. It typically takes around two to three hours to reach the summit. Unlike other treks, this one is regulated by the Karnataka Forest Department, and booking a permit online in advance is mandatory. Trekking usually starts around 4 AM to ensure you reach the peak in time for sunrise. The remains of Tipu Sultan's fort at the summit add a touch of history to the stunning natural beauty. This trek is a must-do for the sheer adrenaline and the unforgettable views.
Savandurga: The Monolithic Challenge
Reputed to be one of the largest monolithic hills in Asia, Savandurga is a formidable and rewarding challenge for seasoned trekkers. Situated 60 kilometres west of Bengaluru, the hill comprises two main trails: Biligudda (the white hill) and Karigudda (the black hill). The Biligudda trail is the more popular and accessible one, though it is still considered a moderate to difficult climb due to its steep, bare rock faces. Arrows marked on the rock guide your way to the top, where ruins of a historic fort and a small Nandi shrine await. The entire trek takes about four to five hours. The views from the summit, overlooking the Arkavathi river and Manchanabele dam, are spectacular. This trek is best avoided during monsoon when the rocks become slippery, with the ideal season being from September to February. Given its difficulty, it’s a trek that offers a true sense of accomplishment.
Essential Trekking Tips
Before you head out, a little preparation goes a long way. Always wear sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, as many trails are rocky and can be slippery. Pack light but smart: carry at least two litres of water, high-energy snacks, a basic first-aid kit, and a torch or headlamp, especially for night or early morning treks. It’s also wise to wear layers of clothing, as it can be cold at the summit during sunrise. Most importantly, respect nature by following the 'leave no trace' principle. Carry all your litter back with you and stick to the marked trails to preserve the beauty of these natural landscapes for everyone. Always check the latest regulations and weather conditions before you go, as permissions and trail conditions can change.
