A Major Station Upgrade
The core reason for the disruption is a major, pre-planned infrastructure project at the Chandigarh railway station. The Northern Railway's Ambala Division has scheduled a 36-day power and traffic block from September 10 to October 15. This extensive
block is necessary to facilitate the redevelopment of the station, which is being handled by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Key tasks include erecting a new through-roof structure and dismantling the old foot-overbridge (FOB) girders. These are complex engineering works that cannot be safely or efficiently carried out while the station is fully operational.

The headline date of September 10 marks the beginning, not the end, of the changes. The work is divided into three 12-day phases to minimize overall impact by keeping parts of the station functional. The first phase runs from September 10 to 21, affecting lines 6, 7, and 8. The second phase, from September 22 to October 3, will focus on lines 4 and 5. The final phase, from October 4 to 15, will cover lines 1, 2, and 3. This phased approach means different trains and platforms will be affected at different times throughout the 36-day period, making it crucial for passengers to check their specific travel dates.

The term 'skipping Chandigarh' translates into three main outcomes for passengers: short-termination, short-origination, and diversions. In total, 54 train services are impacted. For many key trains, Ambala Cantonment will become the temporary new endpoint or starting point. This means passengers booked to or from Chandigarh on these services will need to deboard at Ambala and arrange alternative transport for the final leg of their journey. Some prominent trains affected by this change include the Ramnagar-Chandigarh Express and the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath. Additionally, twelve train services, including routes to Amritsar and Ferozepur, will be cancelled altogether for the duration of the block.

This includes checking for cancellations, changes in originating or terminating stations, and platform shuffles, as over 70 trains will berth at different platforms than usual during the block.
