The Game-Changer: UPI on Credit Cards
For years, UPI payments were a matter of convenience, directly debiting your bank account. While simple, this method offered zero rewards. The landscape has now shifted dramatically with the introduction of RuPay credit cards on UPI. By linking a RuPay credit card to
your preferred UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm), your scan-and-pay transactions are charged to your credit line instead of your savings account. This simple change is the foundation of the entire strategy. It means every eligible merchant QR code you scan is now an opportunity to earn reward points, cashback, or air miles, something previously reserved for physical card swipes or online checkouts. This unlocks a powerful way to accumulate rewards on the most common payment method in India today.
Rule 1: Choose the Right Card for Travel
Not all RuPay credit cards are created equal, especially for travel rewards. While some offer straightforward cashback, the smartest play for flights is a card with a strong travel focus. Look for two types: co-branded airline cards and cards with flexible travel points. For instance, the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Card offers NeuCoins on UPI spends, which can be used for Air India Express flights. On the other hand, cards like the Axis Atlas or Scapia Federal RuPay Credit Card are designed to accumulate points or coins that can be redeemed for travel bookings. The Scapia card, for example, offers a reward rate on UPI spends above ₹500, with points redeemable for flights and hotels directly within its app. The best choice depends on your spending habits and airline preferences.
Rule 2: Master the Art of Points Transfer
This is where you unlock the highest value. Many premium credit cards, including some RuPay variants, allow you to convert your bank's reward points into airline frequent flyer miles or hotel loyalty points. This is often far more valuable than redeeming points for cashback or vouchers. For example, 10,000 bank points might get you ₹2,500 in cashback, but those same points, when transferred to an airline partner like Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer or British Airways' Avios, could be worth ₹15,000 or more when redeemed for a flight, especially for business class. Banks like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and American Express have extensive lists of airline transfer partners. Before transferring, always check the transfer ratio (e.g., 2 bank points = 1 airline mile) and confirm award seat availability with the airline.
Rule 3: Understand Your Card's Ecosystem
Maximising rewards requires knowing the specific rules of your card. Some cards offer accelerated rewards only when you spend within their partner ecosystem. A co-branded MakeMyTrip card, for instance, will give you the best returns on that specific platform. Similarly, HDFC Bank's premium cards like Infinia or Regalia Gold offer significantly boosted reward values when you book flights through their SmartBuy portal. Other cards may have monthly caps on the rewards you can earn from UPI transactions or exclude certain categories like rent payments and wallet loads. It's crucial to read the fine print. Cards like the Kiwi RuPay Credit Card are built specifically for UPI rewards, offering a flat cashback rate that simplifies earnings. Always be aware of your card's strengths and limitations to channel your spending effectively.
Rule 4: Avoid Common Pitfalls
While the rewards are attractive, there are potential traps. Firstly, not all UPI transactions earn rewards; payments to individuals are typically excluded, with points reserved for merchant payments. Secondly, be mindful of annual fees. A premium travel card is only worth it if your rewards and benefits outweigh the yearly cost. Many good lifetime-free cards exist, like the Scapia and Jupiter Edge cards, which are excellent starting points. Thirdly, points and miles can expire, so keep track of their validity. Finally, don't fall into a debt trap. The goal is to earn rewards on your regular, budgeted spending, not to overspend just to chase points. Always pay your credit card bill in full and on time.
