The Core Skills Employers Are Hiring For
While foundational knowledge in areas like Python and machine learning remains important, the specific skills in demand have become far more practical and application-oriented. Job postings across India now frequently list a new set of requirements. One of the most significant new demands is for experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases, skills that were barely on the radar two years ago but are now essential for building advanced Generative AI systems. Beyond this, general proficiency with Generative AI and Large Language Model (LLM) APIs has become a baseline expectation. This includes prompt engineering, which is the crucial art of communicating effectively with AI to get desired outputs. Another fast-growing category is MLOps (Machine Learning Operations), which involves deploying, monitoring, and maintaining AI models in a live environment, reflecting a market that is moving from experimentation to production. These skills are commanding salary premiums of 20% to 35% over traditional software roles.

Sectors like banking and financial services (BFSI), healthcare, retail, and education are actively seeking professionals who can leverage AI. A recent report highlighted that nearly half of all white-collar job descriptions on platforms like Naukri now mention AI skills. How to Build and Showcase Your Skills
In a skills-first market, proving your ability is paramount. Start by building a portfolio of personal projects that demonstrate your practical capabilities. Government-backed initiatives like the AI Skills Passport from Skill India and other online courses provide structured learning and verifiable credentials that recruiters now actively look for. According to NASSCOM, the time to pivot into a data science or AI role can range from three to ten months, depending on your starting point, making upskilling a very achievable goal.
