The Daily Commuter's Challenge
For decades, the journey between Delhi and Gorakhpur has been a test of endurance. As a high-density route connecting the national capital with eastern Uttar Pradesh, it serves a massive population of migrant workers, students, and families. Trains are
frequently overcrowded, especially during festive seasons, and the journey can stretch anywhere from 12 to 16 hours. Passengers have long sought a travel option that is not only affordable but also offers a degree of comfort and predictability. The existing services, while numerous, often struggle to meet the immense demand, leading to long waitlists and challenging travel conditions.
Enter the Amrit Bharat Express
Launched as a new category of superfast passenger trains, the Amrit Bharat Express is Indian Railways' answer to the demand for better, more dignified travel for the common person. Unlike premium services like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat focuses on non-AC sleeper and unreserved coaches, targeting affordability without sacrificing modernity. Following the regularisation of a special service, the Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express (15095/15096) is now a weekly fixture, with its inaugural run on August 27, 2026. The service aims to alleviate pressure on one of the nation's most congested rail corridors.
Engineered for Speed and Smoothness
The most significant technological leap in the Amrit Bharat Express is its 'push-pull' configuration. With a locomotive at both the front and the rear, the train can accelerate and decelerate much faster, reducing overall journey time. This is crucial for routes with multiple stops. The train is capable of speeds up to 130 kmph. Furthermore, the use of semi-permanent couplers dramatically reduces the jerks and shocks commonly felt during starts and stops, offering a significantly smoother ride. For the Delhi-Gorakhpur route, this could shave precious time off the journey while making it far more comfortable.
A New Standard in Passenger Comfort
Inside the coaches, the upgrades are immediately noticeable. Amrit Bharat trains feature improved, more ergonomic seats and berths. Every passenger has access to mobile charging sockets, including both Type-A and Type-C USB ports, a small but essential amenity for long journeys. Other thoughtful additions include foldable snack tables, bottle holders, and radium-illuminated floor strips for better visibility at night. The train also boasts fully sealed gangways, which reduce noise and improve safety when moving between coaches.
Modern Amenities and Enhanced Safety
The focus on a better passenger experience extends to the facilities. The trains are equipped with modern bio-vacuum toilets, similar to those in aircraft and Vande Bharat trains, which are cleaner and more hygienic. They also feature passenger information systems to provide real-time updates on the journey. From a safety perspective, the coaches are fitted with CCTV cameras and an aerosol-based fire suppression system. For the first time on a train in this class, there is also an emergency talk-back system, allowing passengers to communicate directly with the guard or train manager if needed.
