2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece is the benchmark against which all other space epics are measured. Long before the dawn of CGI, Kubrick and his team pioneered revolutionary practical effects to achieve a level of realism that remains astounding. The famous
zero-gravity scenes were accomplished with cleverly hidden wires and rotating sets, including a massive centrifuge that created artificial gravity. For the iconic and psychedelic 'Star Gate' sequence, the crew, led by effects guru Douglas Trumbull, invented the slit-scan photography technique, creating a journey through light and colour that was entirely new. Kubrick insisted on creating effects 'in-camera' to maintain image quality, resulting in a film that feels less like it was made and more like it was captured.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
While more earthbound, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel is a masterclass in world-building and atmospheric cinematography that feels utterly vast. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won an Oscar for his work, uses light, fog, and immense, brutalist architecture to convey a future that is both beautiful and oppressive. Much of the film’s distinctive look comes from its lighting, which is almost constantly in motion to reflect a world where natural light is a rarity and glowing advertisements dominate the sky. Deakins and Villeneuve prioritize visual clarity and mood, using sweeping shots of desolate landscapes and tightly controlled colour palettes—from the sickly orange of a dust-choked Las Vegas to the cold blue of Los Angeles—to make the environment a central character in the story.
Interstellar (2014)
Christopher Nolan is known for his dedication to practical effects, and 'Interstellar' is perhaps his most ambitious project. To create a realistic depiction of space travel, the team built full-scale spaceship interiors and used front projection for exterior views, rather than relying solely on green screens. Nolan also pushed for scientific accuracy, working with physicist Kip Thorne to visualize complex phenomena like wormholes and the gargantuan black hole, Gargantua. The film blends these practical approaches with cutting-edge digital effects to create moments of pure spectacle, from tidal waves on a distant planet to the journey into a tesseract. The result is a film that feels tangible and grounded, making its cosmic journey all the more breathtaking.
Gravity (2013)
Few films have captured the terrifying and beautiful reality of being in space quite like Alfonso Cuarón’s 'Gravity'. The film is a technical marvel, designed to create a completely immersive and visceral experience. To achieve the seamless illusion of zero gravity, the visual effects team at Framestore ended up creating almost the entire film digitally. In most shots, the only 'real' element is the actors' faces, which were filmed inside a custom-built 'Light Box'—a cube lined with millions of LED lights that could project images of Earth and space onto them. Combined with long, fluid takes, the technique gives the audience a profound, and often frightening, sense of floating untethered in the void. It’s a film that truly uses the 3D and large-format screen to its fullest potential.
Dune (2021 & 2024)
Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel is defined by its almost unfathomable sense of scale. From the moment a city-sized spice harvester is swallowed by a sandworm to the sight of colossal spaceships descending on the desert planet of Arrakis, the film is an exercise in visual grandeur. Villeneuve’s direction makes you feel the weight and size of everything on screen. The visual effects are seamlessly integrated with real desert locations, giving the sci-fi world a gritty, lived-in texture. The film was conceived as a spectacle to be witnessed in IMAX, where the expanded aspect ratio fully captures the sweeping landscapes and towering architecture, making the world of 'Dune' feel less like a set and more like a real place you could visit.
