Six Grand Slam Titles
Winning a Grand Slam is the pinnacle of a tennis player's career. Sania Mirza won six of them. She captured three titles in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles, showcasing her dominance on the world's biggest stages. Her mixed doubles victories
came at the Australian Open (2009), French Open (2012), and US Open (2014). In an incredible run, she won three consecutive women's doubles majors with partner Martina Hingis: Wimbledon (2015), the US Open (2015), and the Australian Open (2016). She is the only female tennis player from India to ever win a Grand Slam title.
The World Number 1 Ranking
On April 13, 2015, Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman in history to be ranked World No. 1 in doubles. This wasn't a fleeting visit to the top; she held the number one position for an incredible 91 consecutive weeks, a testament to her consistent excellence. This achievement placed her in an elite club of Indian tennis players, alongside Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, as the only ones to have reached the summit of the world rankings. Her partnership with Martina Hingis during this period was legendary, including a staggering 44-match winning streak, one of the longest in tennis history.
A Trailblazing Singles Career
Before she became a doubles legend, Sania Mirza forged a formidable singles career that broke new ground for Indian tennis. In 2007, she reached a career-high ranking of World No. 27, the highest ever achieved by an Indian female player. She was the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title, which she did on home soil at the 2005 Hyderabad Open. Throughout her singles career, she recorded wins against multiple top-10 players and former world number ones, including Martina Hingis, Victoria Azarenka, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, proving she could compete with the very best.
A Trove of National Honours
Sania Mirza's contributions to Indian sport have been recognized with the nation's highest civilian and sporting honours. Her collection of awards is a stunning reflection of her impact. She received the Arjuna Award in 2004, the Padma Shri in 2006, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (formerly Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna) in 2015, and the Padma Bhushan in 2016. Receiving the Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour, made her only the second tennis player ever to earn that distinction.
Dominance at Multi-Sport Games
Representing India brought out some of Sania's most passionate performances. She amassed a remarkable collection of 14 medals across the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Afro-Asian Games. This haul includes an incredible eight medals from the Asian Games alone—two golds, three silvers, and three bronzes—making her one of India's most decorated athletes at the event. She also won a silver in singles and a bronze in doubles at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Two-Time WTA Finals Champion
The WTA Finals is a prestigious year-end championship reserved for the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world. Qualifying for it is an achievement in itself; winning it cements a player's place among the season's elite. Sania Mirza won the doubles title not once, but twice. She first triumphed in 2014 with partner Cara Black and then successfully defended her title in 2015 with Martina Hingis, capping off one of the most dominant seasons in modern doubles history.
