A Major Boost for Connectivity
The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express service directly connecting Surat and Udaipur, a move celebrated as a significant upgrade for regional travel. This gives Surat its first dedicated Vande Bharat train and provides a much-awaited
premium link between South Gujarat and Southern Rajasthan. The service, operated by Western Railway, is expected to be a game-changer for both tourism and business, linking the diamond city with the popular tourist destination of Udaipur. The introduction of this train, with numbers 26903/26904, involves the discontinuation of the previous Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat, extending that route all the way to Surat.
Schedule and Timings
The Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express runs six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The journey covers a distance of approximately 690 kilometres in about 7 hours and 30 minutes. Train number 26903 departs from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, train number 26904 leaves Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reaches Surat at 11:00 PM the same evening. This schedule allows for a full day of activities in Udaipur before the evening departure or a convenient morning start from Surat.
Route and Key Stops
The train makes several key commercial stops, enhancing connectivity across multiple towns and cities in Gujarat and Rajasthan. During its journey between Surat and Udaipur, the train will halt at nine stations: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. These stops provide crucial links for passengers from various parts of the region to access this high-speed service, making the journey more convenient than ever before.
The Vande Bharat Onboard Experience
As with other Vande Bharat trains, passengers can expect a significant upgrade in comfort and amenities compared to conventional express trains. The eight-coach train is fully air-conditioned and features ergonomically designed reclining seats. The Executive Chair Car offers more spacious seating, often with rotating seats, while the standard Chair Car provides comfortable travel for all. Onboard features include a GPS-based passenger information system, Wi-Fi for infotainment, automatic plug doors, and bio-vacuum toilets for improved hygiene. Each seat is equipped with a mobile charging socket. Onboard catering is also available, with meals typically included in the ticket fare.
Fare Structure and How to Book
While fares can vary based on dynamic pricing, travellers can expect ticket prices to be in line with other Vande Bharat services. Based on similar routes, the fare for an AC Chair Car (CC) is estimated to be between ₹1,400 and ₹1,800, while the Executive Class (EC) could cost between ₹2,600 and ₹3,200. These prices are comparable to other premium trains and reflect the speed and comfort offered. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app once the service is formally entered into the reservation system. The service is anticipated to begin ahead of the Navratri festival season to cater to the festive travel rush.
A Faster Alternative to Road and Rail
This new Vande Bharat service offers a compelling alternative to other modes of transport. A road trip by car from Surat to Udaipur typically takes around 9 to 10 hours, while bus journeys can be even longer. Existing train services on this route often take close to 12 hours. By completing the journey in just 7.5 hours, the Vande Bharat Express cuts travel time significantly, offering a faster, more comfortable, and climate-controlled option for travellers looking to make the most of their time. This makes weekend trips and business travel between the two cities far more feasible.
