Think of the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, as a digital welcome mat. It is an online pre-arrival form that all foreign nationals, including Indian citizens, must fill out before entering the country. Introduced in late 2023, it has replaced
the old paper-based landing cards to speed up immigration and enhance security. It is crucial to understand that the MDAC is not a visa. While Indian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days, completing the MDAC is still a mandatory and separate requirement for a smooth entry.
Who Needs to Apply? No Exceptions for Age
The rule is simple: almost every foreign visitor needs an MDAC. This applies to all Indian tourists, regardless of their age. If you're travelling with family or friends, every single person, including children and even infants, needs their own individual MDAC submitted. The only people exempt are Malaysian citizens, permanent residents, and holders of specific long-term passes like student or employment visas. For a young Indian on a tourist trip, completing the form is a must-do.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Filling the Form
The good news is that the process is straightforward and, most importantly, free. Always use the official Malaysian Immigration Department website to avoid fraudulent third-party sites that charge unnecessary fees. You must submit the form within three days before your arrival date. For example, if you land in Kuala Lumpur on a Friday, you can fill out the form on the preceding Wednesday or Thursday. You will need to enter your personal details, passport information, date of arrival and departure, and your accommodation address in Malaysia. After submitting, a confirmation will be sent to your email. Save a digital copy on your phone or print it out to be safe.
Your Arrival Checklist for Kuala Lumpur
The MDAC is just one part of your travel toolkit. When you arrive at the immigration counter in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), be prepared to present a few other key documents. Make sure you have your passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry. You will also need proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket to show you intend to leave within the visa-free period. Immigration officers may also ask for proof of your accommodation, like a hotel booking confirmation, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
Using the E-Gates for a Faster Exit
Here's a great tip for frequent flyers. Indian passport holders are eligible to use the automated e-gates at KLIA, which can significantly cut down your queuing time. However, there's a catch for first-timers. On your very first visit after the system was introduced, you must first go to a manual immigration counter to have your passport verified and enrolled. Once that's done, on all your subsequent trips to Malaysia, you can head straight to the e-gates after filling out the MDAC for that specific trip. This makes return visits much quicker and more convenient.
