Start With Smart Skin Prep
A long-lasting look begins before you even touch your foundation. Start with a clean, moisturised face to create a smooth canvas. If you have oily skin, consider rubbing an ice cube wrapped in a cloth over your face for about 30 seconds to help close
pores and control sweat before you begin. Follow up with a primer. A mattifying or silicone-based primer is your best friend for Garba, as it creates a barrier between your skin's oils and your makeup, giving it something to grip onto all night long.
Build a Lightweight, Breathable Base
Heavy foundation is not ideal for a high-energy dance night; when mixed with sweat, it can look cakey. Instead, opt for a lightweight, long-wear foundation, a BB cream, or even a tinted moisturiser. Apply it in thin layers, building coverage only where you need it. This approach ensures your skin can breathe and the base is less likely to slide or crease as you dance. Use concealer sparingly to brighten under the eyes and cover any blemishes.
Waterproof Your Eyes
Your eyes are the focal point, so make sure they stay defined. Waterproof eyeliner and mascara are non-negotiable for Garba. These formulas are designed to resist smudging from sweat or humidity, preventing the dreaded 'raccoon eyes' after a few dance numbers. For eyeshadow, consider cream-based products which tend to have better staying power than powders. If you prefer powder, apply an eyeshadow primer first to prevent creasing and make the colours pop. Festive shades of gold, bronze, or colours that match your outfit work beautifully.
Add a Flush of Colour
To bring warmth and radiance to your face, a pop of colour on the cheeks is essential. Cream blushes are an excellent choice for sweaty conditions as they tend to meld with the skin more naturally and fade less than powder formulas. Apply a rosy or peach tint to the apples of your cheeks and blend it upwards towards your temples for a lifted, vibrant look that lasts. You can even use a multi-use tint on your cheeks and lips for a quick, cohesive look.
Lock in Your Lip Colour
Between sips of water and singing along to your favourite Garba tunes, you need a lip colour with serious staying power. Matte and liquid lipsticks are your best bet as they are typically transfer-proof and long-lasting. To make your lipstick last even longer, prep your lips by exfoliating and applying a light balm first. You can also line and fill in your lips with a lip liner before applying your lipstick, which provides an extra base for the colour to cling to.
Set It and Forget It
This is the final, crucial step to lock in all your hard work. Once your makeup is complete, generously spritz your face with a setting spray. A good setting spray acts like a seal, preventing your makeup from smudging, fading, or melting through hours of dancing. For extra staying power, some makeup artists use a 'sandwich' technique: spray after your base, then apply powders, and spray again at the very end.
Pack a Pocket-Sized Touch-Up Kit
Even with the best prep, a little shine might break through. Instead of adding more powder, which can look heavy, carry blotting papers in your potli or bag. A quick dab on your T-zone will absorb excess oil without disturbing your makeup. Having your lipstick and a small mist on hand for a quick refresh between dance sets is also a great idea.
