The Serpentine Thrills of Kashedi Ghat
Leaving the urban sprawl behind, your first real taste of Konkan magic begins at Kashedi Ghat. This mountain pass is a classic road trip challenge, famous for its hairpin bends and steep inclines. But the reward is worth every careful turn of the wheel.
As you ascend, the landscape opens up dramatically. Pull over at a safe spot, and you’ll be greeted by a panoramic vista of deep, verdant valleys blanketed in a light mist, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon months. The air feels cleaner, the world quieter. It’s a powerful reminder that you have officially entered a different, more untamed part of Maharashtra. This stretch isn’t just about the view; it’s the thrill of the drive itself, a perfect overture to the coastal wonders that lie ahead.
Ganpatipule’s Coastal Embrace
Further south, the highway begins to flirt with the coastline, and nowhere is this relationship more intimate than near Ganpatipule. While the main highway runs slightly inland, a quick and worthwhile detour takes you right along the shore. Here, the road runs parallel to one of the most pristine beaches on the Konkan coast. On one side, you have swaying coconut palms and small, red-roofed houses; on the other, the endless blue of the Arabian Sea. The sight of the waves crashing on the white sand, with the famous Swayambhu Ganesh Temple nestled by the shore, is utterly serene. Driving this stretch with your windows down, feeling the sea breeze on your face, is an experience that defines the Konkan dream.
Maravanthe's Unforgettable Parallel Worlds
This is the shot you’ve seen on countless travel blogs and for a very good reason. The stretch of NH 66 at Maravanthe in Karnataka is geographically unique and visually stunning. For about a kilometre, the highway is sandwiched between the Arabian Sea on one side and the Souparnika River on the other. It’s a surreal experience to drive on a narrow strip of land with vast bodies of water flanking you on both sides. The colours are spectacular, especially at sunset when the sky explodes in hues of orange and pink, reflecting on both the sea and the river. It’s a moment so picturesque it feels like a dream, a perfect union of road, river, and sea that you won’t find anywhere else in India.
Goa's Tunnels of Green
As you cross into Goa, the vibe shifts. The road, part of the same NH 66, becomes enveloped in a different kind of beauty. The state’s famously lush vegetation presses in on the highway, creating natural ‘green tunnels’. In many sections, especially in South Goa, the canopies of ancient trees meet overhead, filtering the harsh sunlight into a soft, dappled glow. Driving through these stretches feels like passing through a secret, enchanted forest. The air is thick with the smell of damp earth and tropical blossoms. It’s a calmer, more meditative part of the drive, offering a cool and refreshing respite from the sun-drenched coastal views.
The Divine Seascape at Murudeshwar
Just off the highway in Karnataka lies a view that is both spiritual and spectacular. As you approach Murudeshwar, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the monumental 123-foot Shiva statue, the second tallest in the world, sitting majestically on the Kanduka Hill, with the vast, shimmering Arabian Sea as its backdrop. The sheer scale of the statue against the infinite horizon is breathtaking. The highway gives you a distant but clear perspective of this iconic landmark. Taking the exit to get closer is highly recommended, as the entire temple complex, surrounded by the sea on three sides, offers a sense of peace and grandeur that perfectly complements the natural beauty of the Konkan coast.
