Mandarmani: The Energetic Monsoon Beach
Mandarmani is for those who love the drama of the monsoon sea. Its main attraction is the 13-km-long beach, known for being one of India's longest motorable stretches. During the monsoon, from July to September, the landscape transforms. The sky is filled
with dark, moody clouds, and the waves become powerful and dramatic. While swimming might be risky due to rough seas, the cool breeze and fewer crowds create a romantic and atmospheric setting. A key sight is the thousands of red crabs that scuttle across the sand, especially visible during this season. It's an ideal spot for long walks, enjoying the spray of the waves, and savouring hot snacks from beachside shacks while watching the turbulent waters.
Henry's Island: A Tranquil Nature Retreat
In stark contrast to Mandarmani's buzz, Henry's Island offers quiet solitude. Located near Bakkhali, this island is managed by the West Bengal Fisheries Department and is more of a nature reserve than a typical tourist spot. Private hotels are not allowed, preserving its serene atmosphere. The island is a tapestry of dense mangrove forests, fish-filled ponds called 'bheris', and narrow walking trails. A walk through a bamboo bridge path leads to a quiet, muddy beach where you can peacefully observe nature. The main activities here are birdwatching, walking through the tranquil forests, and climbing the watchtower for a panoramic view of the island and the sea. It is the perfect escape for those seeking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.
Why the Monsoon is Magical Here
While winter is the peak tourist season, the monsoon offers a unique charm and significant budget advantages. The coastal vegetation becomes incredibly lush and green, the temperatures are cooler, and the scenery is spectacular. Fewer tourists mean you can enjoy the beaches without the usual crowds, creating a more personal and peaceful experience. For photographers and romantics, the overcast skies and dramatic seas provide a stunning backdrop. Most importantly, the off-season prices make it a prime time for budget travellers, with many hotels and resorts offering substantial discounts on accommodation.
Getting There from Kolkata
Both destinations are easily accessible from Kolkata, making them ideal for weekend trips. To reach Mandarmani, a drive of about 4-5 hours via NH16 is the most common option. Numerous state-run and private buses also ply this route from Esplanade. The nearest major railway station is Contai (Kanthi), from where you can hire a taxi for the final 30-minute journey. For Henry's Island, the journey is around 130 km. You can drive, or take a train from Sealdah to Namkhana, the last stop, which takes about three hours. From Namkhana, you can hire a toto or van to reach the island. Government buses to Bakkhali also run from Kolkata; you can get off at the Jelighat stop, just before the main town, to find transport to the island.
Planning Your Budget-Friendly Stay
Affordability is a major draw for both locations, especially during the monsoon. In Mandarmani, you can find a wide range of hotels and resorts, with prices for budget stays starting from under ₹1000 per night. Many establishments offer significant off-season discounts. On Henry's Island, accommodation is limited to two government-run guesthouses: the Sundari Guest House and the Mangrove Guest House, managed by the WB State Fisheries Development Corporation. These must be booked in advance through the official government website and are very reasonably priced. Food in both places is delicious and affordable, with a focus on fresh Bengali cuisine and seafood. A simple meal at a local eatery will not strain your wallet, making the entire trip a cost-effective affair.
