Know the Special Train Announcements
The first step to successful festival travel is staying informed. Indian Railways announces these 'Festival Special Trains' in phases across its different zones, like Northern, Central, and Southern Railways. These announcements are typically made a few
weeks before the peak travel period for festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath. For the 2026 season, numerous services for October and November have already been announced. Monitor the official press releases on the Indian Railways website, follow the social media handles of zonal railways (like @RailwayNorthern on X), and check major news outlets. These trains are numbered starting with a '0' and are your best bet when regular trains are already waitlisted.
Key Routes for the 2026 Festive Season
This year, railways have announced a significant number of special services connecting major hubs with hometowns across the country. Central Railway alone is running 418 special services from Mumbai and Pune to destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Northern Railway has introduced services connecting Delhi with cities like Varanasi and Ayodhya, and also from Chandigarh to Patna. Similarly, South Central and Southern Railways have rolled out trains connecting southern cities like Charlapalli, Sengottai, Chennai, and Kollam. Key high-demand routes getting special attention include Mumbai-Gorakhpur, Mumbai-Nagpur, Pune-Gorakhpur, Delhi-Varanasi, and services connecting West Bengal with Odisha.
Mastering the Booking Process
Booking these special trains requires speed and preparation. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app, and at computerised reservation counters. Bookings for these special trains often open just days or weeks before departure, and seats on popular routes get filled within hours. Be ready the moment bookings open—typically at 8:00 AM. A crucial tip is to save passenger details in the 'Master List' on your IRCTC profile beforehand. This allows you to auto-fill information and speed through the checkout process, which can make all the difference when competing with thousands of other users. Using faster payment methods like UPI or the IRCTC eWallet can also prevent transaction failures during peak booking hours.
Understanding 'Special' Fares and Rules
It's important to note that 'Festival Special' trains often operate with 'special charges,' meaning the fares can be higher than on regular mail or express trains. These are dynamic fares that can increase based on demand, similar to the Premium Tatkal system. Unlike regular trains, many of these special services may not have concessions, and Tatkal or Premium Tatkal quotas may not be available on them. The focus of these trains is purely on adding capacity to clear the festive rush. Always check the fare details and rules before finalizing your booking. The coach composition can vary, including a mix of AC First, AC Two-Tier, AC Three-Tier, Sleeper Class, and General Second-Class coaches.
Have a Backup Plan Ready
Even with hundreds of special trains, securing a confirmed ticket on the most sought-after routes can be challenging. If you end up on a waiting list, don't give up immediately. Track your PNR status regularly, especially in the 72 hours before your journey, as last-minute cancellations can lead to confirmations. If your waitlisted ticket doesn't get confirmed, your next best bet is the Tatkal booking window, which opens one day before the train's departure (10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for non-AC). Being flexible with your travel dates by a day or two, or considering boarding from a nearby, less-crowded station, can also significantly increase your chances of finding an available seat on another special or regular train.
