The Best of Both Worlds
Combining the Vande Bharat Express with a journey on a historic railway offers a travel experience that captures the true spirit of South India. The Vande Bharat trains, known for their speed and comfort, are perfect for covering the long distances between
major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Coimbatore efficiently. This allows you to maximise your time exploring destinations rather than spending it in transit. Once you arrive at the foothills of a mountain range, you can switch to a slower, more immersive experience. Historic lines, like the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, are not just about transport; they are moving heritage sites, offering breathtaking views and a nostalgic journey back in time.
Your Modern Ride: Vande Bharat Routes
The Vande Bharat network has significantly improved connectivity across South India. For travellers, several key routes act as gateways to historic rail adventures. The Chennai-Coimbatore and Chennai-Mysuru lines are particularly useful. The Chennai to Coimbatore Vande Bharat, for instance, gets you to the doorstep of the Nilgiri hills in under six hours, a journey that used to take much longer. These trains feature comfortable seating, large windows for scenic views, and onboard catering, ensuring you arrive at your interchange point relaxed and ready for the next leg of your journey. Other notable routes include services connecting Bengaluru with Hubballi-Dharwad, and routes extending through Kerala from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod.
Into the Past: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The crown jewel of South India's historic railways is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This engineering marvel, built over a century ago, runs from Mettupalayam to the popular hill station of Ooty (Udagamandalam). The journey is the destination here. As the charming blue-and-cream 'toy train' ascends nearly 2,000 metres, it passes through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around countless sharp curves. The most scenic part of the journey is from Mettupalayam to Coonoor, where a unique rack-and-pinion system helps the steam locomotive climb Asia's steepest railway gradient. The landscape transforms from lush plains to dense forests, waterfalls, and finally, sprawling tea plantations.
A Sample Itinerary: Chennai to Ooty
Here’s how you can seamlessly combine the two experiences. Start by booking a seat on the Vande Bharat Express from Chennai (MAS) to Coimbatore (CBE). The journey is swift and comfortable. Upon arrival in Coimbatore, Mettupalayam is a short taxi or bus ride away (around 35-40 km). It's best to stay overnight in Mettupalayam to catch the Nilgiri Mountain Railway train, which departs early in the morning at 7:10 AM. The toy train journey from Mettupalayam (MTP) to Ooty (UAM) takes approximately five hours, delivering you to the Queen of Hill Stations just in time for lunch. This itinerary allows you to experience the speed of modern India and the unhurried charm of its colonial past in a single, well-paced trip.
Essential Booking and Travel Tips
Planning is key to making this trip a success. Vande Bharat tickets can be booked on the IRCTC website or app. For the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, booking well in advance is crucial, especially during peak season. Tickets for the toy train open 120 days ahead on IRCTC and are known to sell out very quickly. If the full Mettupalayam-Ooty route is booked, try searching for the Coonoor to Ooty section, which has more services. For the uphill journey on the NMR, a seat on the right side of the train offers better valley views. Remember that there are no pantry cars on the toy train, so carry your own snacks and water for the five-hour journey. Arriving at the station at least 30-45 minutes before departure is always a good idea for a hassle-free start.
