The New 30-Day Visa-Free Rule Explained
Starting September 15, 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand for tourism without a visa and stay for up to 30 days. This replaces the previous 60-day visa exemption scheme that was in place since 2024. The change is part of a broader revision
of Thailand's immigration policies aimed at standardizing entry rules and curbing misuse of tourist visas. For most tourists planning a typical vacation, this 30-day period is ample time to explore the country's popular attractions. It is important to note this is a visa exemption, not a visa-on-arrival; you do not need to apply or pay for anything at the airport for this entry permit.
Mandatory Entry Requirements for Indians
While you don't need a visa for a short trip, you must have specific documents ready for immigration upon arrival. Thai authorities have outlined several key requirements. First, your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. You also need a confirmed return flight ticket to prove you intend to leave within the 30-day period. Additionally, you should have proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings for your stay. A significant requirement is proof of funds: travellers must carry at least 20,000 Thai Baht (THB) in cash per person. Finally, you must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before your flight.
Option 1: Extending Your 30-Day Stay
If you fall in love with Thailand and wish to stay a bit longer than 30 days, you have the option to apply for a one-time extension. This extension can grant you up to an additional 30 days, giving you a total stay of around 60 days. To do this, you must visit a local Thai Immigration office before your initial 30-day permission expires. The process involves submitting a TM.7 application form, your passport, a recent photograph, and paying a fee of 1,900 THB. Approval is at the discretion of the immigration officer, so it's wise to apply at least a week before your stay ends.
Option 2: Planning for a Longer Trip in Advance
For those who know from the start that 30 days won't be enough, the best approach is to apply for a tourist visa before leaving India. The standard Single-Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) grants a stay of 60 days upon arrival. This visa can also be extended by 30 days at an immigration office in Thailand, allowing for a total stay of up to 90 days. You can apply for this e-Visa through the official Thai portal. The fee for a single-entry tourist visa was set at INR 3,000 as of April 2026. This route is recommended for those planning extended holidays or workcations to avoid any visa-related stress during their trip.
Special Visas for Digital Nomads and Long-Term Stays
Thailand is also catering to a new generation of travellers with longer-term goals. For remote workers, freelancers, and others wishing to stay for an extended period, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is an excellent option. Introduced recently, the DTV is valid for five years and allows multiple entries, with each stay permitted for up to 180 days. It's even possible to get one in-country extension for another 180 days, though you must then exit and re-enter. Applicants need to show proof of funds of at least 500,000 THB. This visa is designed specifically for individuals who are not seeking traditional employment in Thailand but wish to make it their base for an extended time. It's crucial to remember that the 30-day visa exemption is strictly for tourism, and attempting to work on it can lead to serious penalties.
