Why Your Refund Is Stuck
The Income Tax Department now issues all refunds directly to taxpayers' bank accounts through electronic credit. For this to happen, you must have at least one bank account pre-validated on the e-filing portal. A refund can fail if the account details
provided are incorrect, the bank has merged, the IFSC code has changed, or the account is inactive. Another common reason is a mismatch between your name as per your PAN card and the name registered with your bank account. The system requires an exact match to process the payment. Without a successfully pre-validated account nominated for a refund, the department cannot credit the amount, leading to a 'Refund Failed' status.
Check Your Bank Account Status
Before you can fix the problem, you need to identify it. The first step is to check the validation status of your bank accounts linked to your PAN. You can do this by logging into the official Income Tax e-filing portal using your PAN as the user ID and your password. Once you're on your dashboard, navigate to the 'Profile' section, which is usually found in the top-right corner. From there, select 'My Bank Account'. This page will show you all the bank accounts you have added, categorised under tabs like 'Added', 'Failed', and 'Removed Bank Accounts'. Here you can see the status of each account, which may be 'Validated', 'Validation in Progress', or 'Validation Failed'.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Re-Validate
If you find an account in the 'Failed Bank Accounts' tab or notice that your previously validated account has outdated details (like an old IFSC code due to a bank merger), you need to re-validate it. Here’s the process: 1. Select the Account: In the 'My Bank Account' section, find the account you wish to fix. Click on the three vertical dots and select the 'Re-validate' option. 2. Update Details: The portal will show your pre-filled bank details. Update the necessary information, such as the account number or IFSC code. 3. Validate: After making the corrections, click the 'Validate' button. The request is sent electronically to your bank. The process can take some time, but the status will eventually change to 'Validated' if the details are correct. 4. Nominate for Refund: Once an account is successfully validated, you must nominate it to receive refunds. On the 'My Bank Account' page, simply enable the 'Nominate for Refund' toggle switch for the correct account.
Adding a New Bank Account
If your desired bank account isn't listed at all, you can add it from scratch. In the 'My Bank Account' section, click on 'Add Bank Account'. You will need to provide the bank account number, account type, and IFSC code. The system will auto-populate the bank name and branch. Ensure all details are accurate and that the mobile number and email ID associated with your e-filing profile match the ones registered with your bank. After entering the details, click 'Validate' and complete the verification process, often using an Aadhaar OTP or another e-verification method.
Requesting a Refund Re-issue
Simply validating your bank account is not enough to get your failed refund. You must explicitly ask the department to send the money again by raising a 'Refund Re-issue Request'. After you have a validated and nominated bank account, navigate to the 'Services' menu on your dashboard and click on 'Refund Reissue'. The portal will display the assessment year for which the refund failed. Select the relevant entry, choose your newly validated bank account, and submit the request after e-verification. You will receive a transaction ID for future reference, and you can track the status of your re-issue request on the portal.
