Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: The Imperial Winter Capital
Once the summer capital of British India, Shimla's colonial pedigree is undeniable, especially under a blanket of winter snow. The drive to Shimla is an experience in itself, with the winding road offering progressively dramatic valley views. In winter,
the town transforms. The Ridge and the Mall Road, often bustling, take on a serene quality. Historic buildings like the Viceregal Lodge, built in 1888, and the neo-Gothic Christ Church (1857) look even more stately against a backdrop of snow-dusted deodars. A winter drive here is a journey into the heart of the Raj-era's most celebrated hill station. While snowfall can make driving tricky, the main arteries are usually cleared, offering access to a winter wonderland steeped in history. A ride on the UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is another way to soak in the region's colonial engineering marvels.
Mussoorie, Uttarakhand: The Unofficial Queen of Romance
While Shimla was the seat of power, Mussoorie was the empire's playground—a place for leisure and romance. Established in 1823 by a British officer, its charm lies in its less formal, more intimate connection to the past. The drive up from Dehradun is a classic mountain journey. In town, a walk along Camel's Back Road or through the quieter lanes of Landour reveals colonial bungalows, historic churches like Christ Church (1836), and old libraries. The Savoy Hotel, opened in 1902, is a landmark that has hosted royalty and dignitaries for over a century. Though Mussoorie was never an official summer capital, its historical fabric is rich, with tales of authors like Ruskin Bond and even Sir George Everest, who lived here before his famous survey. Winter brings fewer crowds and a cozy, misty atmosphere, perfect for exploring its historic nooks.
Darjeeling, West Bengal: Tea Gardens and Colonial Vistas
In the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling offers a different flavour of colonial history, infused with the aroma of world-famous tea. The town became a sanatorium for British officials and eventually the summer capital of the Bengal Presidency. A winter visit promises crisp, clear skies and phenomenal views of Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak. Key to the experience is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the beloved 'Toy Train', which winds its way through the hills. Historic sites like St. Andrew's Church and the colonial-era bungalows speak of a bygone era. The drive to Darjeeling, with its views of sprawling tea estates, is breathtaking. While it doesn't always receive heavy snow in the main town, the atmosphere is decidedly wintry and perfect for exploring landmarks like the Batasia Loop war memorial and the historic Planters Club.
Ooty, Tamil Nadu: A Nilgiri Gem
Down south, in the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty (Udhagamandalam) was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Its history began in the 1820s when John Sullivan, the then-collector of Coimbatore, established it as a retreat. The Stone House, his residence started in 1822, still stands. Winter in Ooty is mild and misty, not snowy, making it ideal for pleasant drives. The heritage experience is anchored by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, another UNESCO World Heritage site, which chugs through the rolling hills. St. Stephen's Church, built in 1830, is a prime example of colonial architecture, with its timber reputedly taken from Tipu Sultan's palace. Exploring the Wenlock Downs, with its vast grasslands, or visiting colonial-era clubs gives drivers a sense of the town’s enduring historical landscape.
A Note on Winter Driving
A winter mountain journey is rewarding but requires caution. Roads to higher-altitude destinations like Shimla and Mussoorie can be affected by snow and ice. It's essential to check road conditions before you travel, drive slowly, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration on slippery patches. Driving during daylight hours is always safer. Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained, with good tyres, and working heaters. Carrying warm clothing, a flask with a hot beverage, and some snacks is advisable in case of delays due to weather or traffic congestion, which can occur after heavy snowfall.
