For decades, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport was the undisputed gateway to the capital region. Now, with Noida International Airport commencing operations in June 2026, travellers have a choice. This isn't just about an alternative; it's a fundamental
shift in how millions in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Western UP will plan their air travel. While IGI is a mature, sprawling hub with immense capacity, NIA in Jewar is a modern, scalable airport designed for the future. The immediate question for every passenger is no longer just which airline, but which airport.
The Ground Access Dilemma
A cheaper flight from Jewar means little if the cost and time to get there negate the savings. This is the central issue facing NCR travellers. IGI boasts unparalleled connectivity with the Airport Express Metro, extensive bus routes, and a dense network of cab services. Reaching NIA, however, is currently a road-centric affair, primarily via the Yamuna Expressway. Travel time from South Delhi or Gurgaon can easily exceed 90-120 minutes, especially during peak hours. In contrast, someone in Greater Noida might find Jewar significantly closer, saving over an hour compared to a trip to IGI. Until planned metro and rapid rail links to NIA become fully operational, the 'last-mile' journey is a major variable in your travel equation.
Flight Frequency and Network
When it comes to the sheer number of flights and destinations, IGI Airport remains the clear leader. With over 1,500 daily flight movements, it offers a vast network of domestic and international connections. NIA, in its initial phase, has started with a more modest schedule. Launch airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air are building up the network, expanding from a handful of cities in June to over 16 domestic destinations by July 2026. However, this is still a fraction of IGI's scale. For international travel, the gap is even wider, with NIA expecting to start international operations only towards the end of 2026. This means if you need flexibility, last-minute options, or are flying to a less common destination, your search will likely still lead you to IGI.
Calculating the True Cost
The price of your journey isn't just the airfare. Cab fares to Jewar from Delhi or Gurgaon can be substantial, often running into thousands of rupees, plus tolls for the Yamuna Expressway. This added expense can quickly erode any savings from a promotional flight ticket. In fact, concerns have been raised that higher airport charges at NIA could make fares comparable to or even more expensive than IGI, despite UP's lower tax on aviation fuel. A survey even found that the majority of flyers might stick with IGI due to a combination of proximity and concerns over higher overall costs at Jewar. Before booking, a smart traveller must add the estimated round-trip cab fare and toll costs to the ticket price for a true comparison.
A Checklist for the NCR Traveller
So, how do you choose? Ask yourself these simple questions: 1. Where am I starting from? If you're in Noida, Greater Noida, or parts of Ghaziabad, Jewar is likely a much more convenient option in terms of travel time. For those in West Delhi, Gurgaon, or Central Delhi, IGI remains the default choice. 2. What time is my flight? An early morning departure from NIA might mean a smooth drive on an empty expressway, but a late-night arrival could present challenges with cab availability and safety perceptions on less-trafficked roads. 3. Which airline and route am I taking? Check if your preferred airline and destination are even served by NIA. While the network is growing, it is still limited compared to IGI's comprehensive schedule. 4. What is my total budget? Do the math. Add the cost of a cab and tolls to your NIA flight ticket and compare it to the total cost of flying from IGI. The cheapest base fare is not always the cheapest final cost.
