Why Your Refund Might Be Taking Longer
After you file your Income Tax Return (ITR), the journey isn't over. The Income Tax Department begins processing it, and a key step is verification. With the help of technology, the department cross-references the information you've declared with data
it has from various sources. This includes your Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). The primary goal is to ensure accuracy and prevent fraud. While this enhanced scrutiny is good for the system, it can mean a longer wait for taxpayers if any discrepancies, no matter how minor, are flagged for a closer look. The usual processing time is about two to six weeks after e-verification, but this can extend if your return requires additional review.
The Department's Verification Checklist
The verification process is a detailed check to ensure the claims made in your ITR are accurate and match the data available with the government. The system automatically flags returns with certain characteristics for a more detailed assessment. Common triggers include a mismatch between the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) you've claimed and the amount reflected in your Form 26AS or AIS. Claiming deductions without sufficient proof, reporting significant fluctuations in income compared to previous years, or filing for an unusually large refund amount can also lead to your return being picked for manual review. Essentially, the department is confirming that the taxes paid on your behalf and the income you've reported align perfectly with their records.
Common Errors That Cause Delays
Many delays are caused by simple, avoidable errors made during filing. One of the most frequent mistakes is providing incorrect bank account details. An invalid account number, wrong IFSC code, or a closed account will cause the refund to fail. It's also crucial that the bank account is pre-validated on the income tax portal. Another major cause for delay is failing to e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing. The department only begins processing a return after it has been verified. Other common slip-ups include choosing the wrong ITR form, errors in personal details like PAN or Aadhaar, and claiming deductions that don't apply to you.
How to Check Your Refund Status
Instead of waiting anxiously, you can proactively track your refund. The easiest way is through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. Log in with your User ID (your PAN) and password. Navigate to 'e-File', then 'Income Tax Returns', and finally 'View Filed Returns'. Here you can select the relevant Assessment Year (for the last financial year, it's AY 2026-27) and click 'View Details' to see the status. The portal will show if your return is still being processed, if the refund has been approved, or if it has been sent. You can also check the status on the TIN NSDL website, which specifically tracks tax refunds.
What to Do If Your Refund Is Stuck
If several weeks have passed and your refund status hasn't changed, it's time to investigate. First, check your email and the e-filing portal for any communication or notices from the department. Often, if there's a discrepancy, they will send a notice under Section 143(1) asking for clarification or additional documents. Responding to these notices promptly is crucial. Also, double-check that your bank account is pre-validated. If you find an error in your original filing, you may need to file a revised return. If there are no notices and all your details seem correct, but the delay persists, you can raise a grievance on the e-filing portal to bring your case to the department's attention.
