The Pookalam, Reimagined
The pookalam, or floral carpet, is the heart of Onam decorations. While traditionally made with fresh flowers that are discarded daily, a reusable version can be a stunning and practical alternative. Consider creating a base from a round piece of plywood,
canvas, or even an old tablecloth. Upon this, you can arrange a pookalam made from fabric petals, felt cutouts, or painted wooden shapes. These can be glued down for a permanent design or attached with velcro dots to allow for new patterns each year. Another creative option is an embroidered pookalam on a large hoop, which can be hung as a wall tapestry during the festival and stored easily. While it may not have the fragrance of fresh petals, it offers a lasting beauty that can become a cherished family heirloom.
Invest in Timeless Brass
Brass decor is integral to the classic Onam aesthetic. Investing in quality brass items is a one-time purchase that pays dividends for a lifetime of festivals. A traditional 'nilavilakku' (tall standing lamp) is a must-have, anchoring your festive space with its warm glow. An 'uruli', a wide, shallow brass bowl, is incredibly versatile. During Onam, you can fill it with water and float fresh flowers and tea lights for a welcoming entryway display. For the rest of the year, it can serve as a striking centrepiece. To care for brass, clean it with tamarind paste or a specialized cleaner before storing it in a dry place to prevent tarnishing from humidity.
Everlasting Floral Garlands
Marigold garlands, or 'torans', are essential for decorating doorways and walls. Instead of buying fresh garlands that wilt, consider high-quality artificial ones. Modern silk and fabric flowers are remarkably realistic and can be used year after year. Look for garlands made from durable fabrics and strong thread. These can be draped over doors, windows, and staircases to create a festive atmosphere. For a personal touch, you can also string together colourful pom-poms, beads, or small bells to create unique, reusable hangings that reflect your personal style.
Textiles and Traditional Art
Leverage the beauty of traditional Keralan textiles. A classic Kasavu mundu or saree, with its distinctive off-white and gold design, can be repurposed as a beautiful table runner or backdrop. Cushion covers with elephant motifs or Kathakali designs can instantly add a festive touch to your living room. These fabric items are easy to wash and store. You can also invest in a few pieces of traditional art, like a Kathakali mask or a miniature snake boat ('chundan vallam'), which serve as elegant decorative accents during Onam and as conversation-starting art pieces all year round.
Smart Storage for Longevity
Proper storage is key to making your decorations last. Once the festivities are over, take the time to clean everything thoroughly. Dust off artificial flowers and wipe down brassware. Wind string lights around a piece of cardboard to prevent tangling. Store fabric items like cushion covers and torans in cotton bags with silica gel packets to absorb moisture and prevent mustiness. Label your storage boxes clearly so you can easily find what you need when the next Onam season arrives. By dedicating a little time to post-festival care, you ensure your beautiful decorations are ready to bring joy for many more celebrations.
