The evidence strongly supports that India's second sleeper Vande Bharat will be named the Sant Ravidas Express. According to recent announcements from the Railway Board, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually flag off the service on July 17,
2026. The confirmed route will connect Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with Chheharta, near Amritsar, in Punjab. This tri-weekly service is not a daily train; it will operate three times a week in each direction. The railways have also released a detailed timetable, with Train No. 14624 running from Chheharta to Varanasi and Train No. 14623 on the return journey. Key stops include major cities like Lucknow, Bareilly, Ambala Cantt, and Jalandhar City, improving overnight connectivity between the two states.
Fiction: The Delhi-Patna or Mumbai-Bengaluru Routes
Rumours have been a constant companion to the Vande Bharat rollout. Recent reports surfaced suggesting the second sleeper would run on the high-demand Delhi-Patna corridor. While this route is a prime candidate for future upgrades, the latest official announcements do not support this as the second operational route. Similarly, earlier this year, there was considerable discussion about a sleeper service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai. Officials had confirmed this route was approved and would be the second one. However, the launch of the Varanasi-Chheharta service has superseded those plans for now. While these routes might be part of the future expansion, the confirmed second service is the Sant Ravidas Express.
Supported: A Major Upgrade Over Rajdhani
Regardless of the route, the Vande Bharat sleeper platform itself represents a significant leap from the existing Rajdhani and Duronto Express trains. The key difference is the self-propelled trainset design, which eliminates the need for a locomotive and allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, cutting journey times. The trains are designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, though operational speeds will be around 160 kmph.
