A Major Boost for Summer Travel
To accommodate the surge in passenger demand during the peak summer months, Indian Railways has announced a significant expansion of its services. For 2026, over 18,000 special train trips are being operated between April and mid-July, a substantial increase
from the previous year. This initiative aims to connect major urban hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai with destinations in Bihar, Eastern UP, Bengal, and other parts of the country, ensuring smoother travel for families on vacation, students heading home, and everyone in between. Different railway zones have been rolling out these services in batches, with Central Railway, Western Railway, and Northern Railway among the most active. Recently, Central Railway announced the extension of 216 special services to cater to continued high demand, stretching some operations into September.
Key Routes and Destinations
The summer special trains cover a wide network of high-demand corridors. The heaviest deployment connects major cities with regions that see a large influx of travellers during the holidays. Some of the most prominent routes include services from Mumbai and Pune to destinations like Danapur, Gorakhpur, and Banaras. Similarly, there is enhanced connectivity from Delhi to cities in Bihar such as Patna and Muzaffarpur. Western Railway has extended several weekly special services connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad with destinations like Katihar, Banaras, and Darbhanga. South Central Railway and Southern Railway have also been active, with special trains linking cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru to various parts of the country, including Visakhapatnam and Kanniyakumari. These trains are identifiable by their 5-digit number, which typically starts with a '0'.
Your Guide to Booking Tickets
Booking tickets for these special trains is straightforward, but speed is essential. Reservations are primarily available online through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and the IRCTC Rail Connect app. Bookings for general quota seats on these trains typically open 60 days in advance of the travel date. For those making last-minute plans, the Tatkal quota is an option. Tatkal bookings open one day before the train's departure, at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes. It's important to note that Aadhaar OTP verification is now mandatory for all online Tatkal bookings. Due to high demand, it's advisable to have your IRCTC account ready and a 'Master List' of passengers prepared in advance to speed up the booking process. While most bookings are online, tickets for some unreserved special trains can be purchased at station counters via the UTS system.
What to Expect and Pro Tips
Special trains generally offer the same amenities as their regular counterparts, but it's always wise to check for specific services like pantry cars when booking. Fares for these trains often include a 'Special Charge', making them slightly more expensive than regular services on the same route. Given the rush, waitlisted tickets are common. You can use various apps and the official 139 SMS service to track your PNR status. If your preferred train is full, consider booking from an alternative, nearby station, as this can sometimes increase your chances of getting a confirmed seat. Also, look for announcements from zonal railways, as they often extend the run of popular special trains based on demand, providing additional booking opportunities. Always double-check the train schedule and platform information before heading to the station, as changes can occur.
