The Familiar Digital Stampede
For millions of Indians, the daily Tatkal booking window is a battle against time and technology. Come 10 AM, a torrent of users descends upon the IRCTC website and app, leading to crashes, frozen payment gateways, and the dreaded 'spinning wheel of doom'.
The existing Passenger Reservation System (PRS), parts of which are nearly four decades old, has struggled to keep pace. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the current platform can handle approximately 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. While a significant number, it's often no match for the simultaneous demand generated during festive seasons and the Tatkal rush, leading to widespread frustration as precious seconds tick by and tickets vanish.
A Quantum Leap in Capacity
Indian Railways has initiated a complete overhaul of its core booking infrastructure, moving to a modern, cloud-based platform. The new system represents a monumental jump in performance. According to the Ministry of Railways, the next-generation PRS is designed to process over 1.5 lakh (150,000) ticket bookings per minute—a nearly five-fold increase from the current capacity. This isn't just about booking; the capacity for passenger enquiries, such as checking PNR status or seat availability, will also see a tenfold increase, from about 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This boost is engineered specifically to withstand the intense pressure of peak booking hours.

The transition to the new system, which is being rolled out in phases starting August 2026, aims to make the booking experience smoother, faster, and more reliable. For the average passenger, this translates to tangible benefits. The increased capacity should mean fewer website crashes and server timeouts during the critical first few minutes of the Tatkal window. The process of searching for trains, checking availability, and completing payments will become significantly quicker, reducing the chances of a session timing out before a transaction is complete. The goal is to transform booking from a game of chance into a straightforward and efficient process. A beta version of the new IRCTC website launched in July 2026 has already shown promising results, with a noticeable improvement in the number of Tatkal bookings completed within the first three to five minutes.
More Than Just Speed
This upgrade is part of a broader push for a more passenger-centric railway experience. The new system is built to be more scalable and flexible, allowing for future enhancements. The redesigned interface is expected to be more user-friendly and multilingual, catering to a wider audience. Furthermore, the railway ministry is leveraging technology to address other long-standing issues. For instance, an AI-based system for predicting waitlist confirmation has been improved to help passengers make more informed travel decisions. The phased rollout ensures that the transition happens with minimal disruption to a service that is a lifeline for the nation, with nearly 89% of all reserved tickets now being booked online.
