The New 30-Day Visa-Free Rule
The Thai cabinet has officially approved a revised policy that grants Indian passport holders visa-free entry into the country for a period of up to 30 days. This decision provides clarity after a period of uncertainty. Earlier discussions in May had
suggested a potential end to the visa-free scheme, which caused confusion and a reported dip in travel bookings from India. The government has now reversed that course, opting to retain the popular policy but with a shorter stay duration. Previously, Indian travellers could enjoy a visa-free stay of up to 60 days. This has now been standardized to 30 days.
Why the Change in Policy?
The adjustment from 60 days to 30 days is part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa regulations. According to the Thai Tourism Minister, the 30-day period better aligns with the typical travel patterns of Indian tourists, who on average stay for about a week. The government has stated the move is aimed at supporting the tourism industry while also strengthening immigration controls. Concerns had been raised about the longer 60-day exemption being misused for non-tourism activities. By standardizing the visa-free period, authorities aim to create a more uniform system and prevent potential misuse while still welcoming tourists. India remains one of the largest and most important tourism markets for Thailand, ranking third this year after only China and Malaysia.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
For the vast majority of Indian tourists, this policy revision is excellent news. The 30-day window is more than sufficient for most holiday plans, whether it's a week-long island-hopping adventure in Krabi, a shopping trip in Bangkok, or a relaxing getaway in Phuket. The primary benefit is the continued ease of travel. You can book spontaneous trips without the cost or administrative hassle of applying for a visa in advance. The change primarily affects those who were planning extended stays of over a month. If you intend to stay in Thailand for longer than 30 days, you will now need to apply for an appropriate visa before your travels or investigate options for an extension once you are in the country.
Essential Documents and Requirements
While you won't need a visa sticker in your passport before you fly, several requirements remain essential for smooth entry into Thailand. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of arrival. You should also have proof of a confirmed return ticket, evidence of accommodation for your stay, and sufficient funds for your expenses. Additionally, all foreign travellers are required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before landing. This system is designed to improve the screening process for all arrivals. Keeping these documents handy will ensure a hassle-free immigration process upon your arrival in the Land of Smiles.
