This part of the journey is renowned for its dense forests and dramatic landscapes. While it requires different planning than the direct Mumbai-Goa train, it highlights the growing network of scenic VistaDome routes available for exploring the Western Ghats.
Are The Fares Truly Budget-Friendly?
The term "budget-friendly" is relative, but the VistaDome offers a premium experience for a reasonable price. The fare is set at 1.1 times the base fare of an Executive Class (EC) seat on a Shatabdi Express, plus other applicable charges like GST. For the Mumbai-Goa route on the Jan Shatabdi Express, a ticket can cost around ₹2,200 - ₹2,300. When compared to a standard Second Sitting ticket on the same train which can be just over ₹300, it is a significant premium. However, when compared to the cost of a flight, which can be much higher especially if booked last-minute, the VistaDome coach presents excellent value. It offers far superior views and comfort than a standard train and a more immersive travel experience than a plane, making it a budget-friendly luxury.
How to Book Your VistaDome Ticket
Booking a seat in a VistaDome coach is straightforward and can be done through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. There isn't a separate class called 'VistaDome' in the booking portal. When searching for your train, you need to select either 'AC Chair Car' (CC) or 'Executive Chair Car' (EC) in the class filter. The VistaDome coaches are typically designated with the code 'EV' on trains that have them. Simply log in to your IRCTC account, enter your departure and destination stations (e.g., CSMT to MAO for Goa), select your date, and filter by the appropriate class. If the train has a VistaDome coach and seats are available, you'll be able to book it just like any other ticket. It's advisable to book well in advance, as these coaches are extremely popular and tend to fill up quickly, especially during holidays and weekends.
