This phenomenon is why a 28°C night in the dry season can feel far more pleasant than a 28°C night during the monsoon.

This leads to the concept of a 'feels like' temperature, or heat index. It's not just your imagination; the combination of heat and high humidity genuinely makes it feel hotter than the actual air temperature. For example, an air temperature of 32°C with 70% humidity can feel like a sweltering 41°C. The moisture in the air effectively tricks your body into perceiving more intense heat because its primary cooling mechanism is handicapped. Your air conditioner might be working overtime to lower the temperature, but if it's not effectively removing moisture, the room will still feel muggy and uncomfortable.
From Discomfort to Disturbed Sleep
High humidity does more than just cause discomfort; it directly impacts the quality of your sleep. The ideal indoor humidity for sleeping is between 30% and 50%. When levels creep above 60%, it can disrupt your sleep cycles, particularly the restorative deep sleep and REM stages. This leads to increased wakefulness, tossing and turning, and a feeling of not being rested in the morning. While you can't change the weather, you can control your indoor environment. Start with ventilation. Whenever it’s not raining, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create cross-ventilation, which pushes out moist air. Running ceiling or exhaust fans, even on a low setting, helps circulate air and prevents it from becoming stagnant. If you use an air conditioner, check if it has a 'dry' or 'dehumidify' mode, which is specifically designed to remove moisture from the air. In particularly damp areas like bathrooms or basements, a standalone dehumidifier can make a significant difference.

A few small changes in your routine can also lead to more comfortable nights. Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from natural fibres like cotton or linen, as they don't trap heat and moisture like synthetic fabrics do. Avoid drying clothes indoors, as this releases a large amount of moisture into the air. If you must, do it in a well-ventilated room with a fan running. Taking a cool shower before bed can help lower your body temperature, giving you a head start on comfort. Finally, materials like rock salt or activated charcoal placed in bowls can passively absorb moisture in small, enclosed spaces like cupboards.
