What is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, is a mandatory online pre-arrival form for nearly all foreign nationals entering the country, including Indian citizens. It was introduced by the Malaysian Immigration Department to replace the old paper-based
landing cards, aiming to speed up immigration clearance and enhance security. Think of it not as a visa, but as a digital registration of your arrival details. This information is submitted online before you travel, allowing immigration officers to have your details ready in their system when you land. The process is completely free of charge and must be done through the official government portal.
MDAC and Visa-Free Travel for Indians
A common point of confusion for travellers is the relationship between the MDAC and Malaysia's visa-free policy. Indian passport holders can enjoy visa-free entry for tourism or business for up to 30 days, a policy extended until December 31, 2026. However, 'visa-free' does not mean 'document-free'. The MDAC is a mandatory requirement for all Indian travellers, regardless of their visa status. You must complete the MDAC in addition to meeting the other requirements for visa-free entry, which include having a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed return ticket, and proof of accommodation and sufficient funds.
How to Complete Your MDAC Correctly
Completing the MDAC is a straightforward process, but timing is key. You must submit the form within the three days (72 hours) immediately preceding your arrival in Malaysia. Submitting it any earlier will render the application invalid. To complete the form, visit the official Immigration Department portal. You will need to provide your personal details (name, date of birth, passport number), travel information (date of arrival, flight number, port of entry), and the address of your accommodation in Malaysia. After submission, a confirmation is sent to your email, which you should save digitally, although a printout isn't strictly required.
Who Is Exempt from the MDAC?
While the MDAC is mandatory for most travellers, including Indian tourists, there are a few specific exemptions. You are not required to fill out the MDAC if you are a citizen of Singapore, a permanent resident of Malaysia, or a holder of a Malaysian long-term pass (like a work or student pass). Transit passengers who do not pass through immigration clearance are also exempt. However, for the vast majority of Indian citizens planning a holiday or short business trip to Malaysia, completing the MDAC is a non-negotiable step.
The Arrival Process at the Airport
With your MDAC submitted, the arrival process at Malaysian airports like Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is designed to be much smoother. When you approach the immigration counter, the officer will scan your passport and verify your details against the submitted MDAC record in their system. Some eligible travellers from specific countries can even use the automated e-gates for faster clearance. While this is being rolled out, Indian travellers on their first visit may need to use the manual counter to verify their passport. Having all your documents in order—passport, return ticket, hotel bookings, and MDAC confirmation—will ensure you clear immigration quickly and can begin your Malaysian adventure without any delays.
